Webmaster Tools verification strategies

Webmaster level: all

Verifying ownership of your website is the first step towards using Google Webmaster Tools. To help you keep verification simple & reduce its maintenance to a minimum, especially when you have multiple people using Webmaster Tools, we’ve put together a small list of tips & tricks that we’d like to share with you:
  • The method that you choose for verification is up to you, and may depend on your CMS & hosting providers. If you want to be sure that changes on your side don’t result in an accidental loss of the verification status, you may even want to consider using two methods in parallel.
  • Back in 2009, we updated the format of the verification meta tag and file. If you’re still using the old format, we recommend moving to the newer version. The newer meta tag is called “google-site-verification, and the newer file format contains just one line with the file name. While we’re currently supporting ye olde format, using the newer one ensures that you’re good to go in the future.
  • When removing users’ access in Webmaster Tools, remember to remove any active associated verification tokens (file, meta tag, etc.). Leaving them on your server means that these users would be able to gain access again at any time. You can view the site owners list in Webmaster Tools under Configuration / Users.
  • If multiple people need to access the site, we recommend using the “add users” functionality in Webmaster Tools. This makes it easier for you to maintain the access control list without having to modify files or settings on your servers.
  • Also, if multiple people from your organization need to use Webmaster Tools, it can be a good policy to only allow users with email addresses from your domain. By doing that, you can verify at a glance that only users from your company have access. Additionally, when employees leave, access to Webmaster Tools is automatically taken care of when that account is disabled.
  • Consider using “restricted” (read-only) access where possible. Settings generally don’t need to be changed on a daily basis, and when they do need to be changed, it can be easier to document them if they have to go through a central account.

We hope these tips help you to simplify the situation around verification of your website in Webmaster Tools. For more questions about verification, feel free to drop by our Webmaster Help Forums.

  6. No Ashish! I asked just the title that was best about it was the data: blog.title or the regular title.

Both titles should well be read equally well by all search engines? But change absolutely nothing in the blog.

This was just a general question.

    Best regards
    Christian
    P. S. This was about the meta tag title.

  8. Hi!
I have a blog with this platform (www.tovekramer.blogspot.se) but since a couple of days ago, I can´t upload my photos or videos anymore? It´s really bothering cause my readers wants some new photos, and I want be able to share it with them!
I guess it´s a bug of something in the system, cause the button you will click on to choose your pic, doesn´t came up at all. It´s gone.
Please, I would be really glad if you could fix the problem cause if not, I have to change platform as soon as possible!
I really hope you will hear my appeal...

  10. Hi, this is in response to the question above mine: from julidarmaputra , I wanted to answer this question if that's okay.

Question: " still confuse about seo. I have build my web more than 6 month. but my PR still 0. What shoul I do?"

Answer: The best answer is that you simply need to change your expectation about PageRank - completely. Don't get fixated, as it's not what gets you business.

In the last six months, you should have surely built up a following of either fans, readers or even (hopefully) paying customers. That process will help your organic growth in the SERPs, which will cause you to continue to grow until next thing you know: you're #1 in Google When You Are Actually Qualified to be First in Google.

After a couple years I'm first for a few terms at http://ufo-sightings-today.tumblr.com - such as "UFO Sightings Today." And if I had been getting that traffic a year ago, I wouldn't be able to answer the more complicated questions about my field (in this case, Ufology). See what the issue is here? You should be focused on building life-long relationships with customers, as that's what "successful business" all boils down too, in my opinion.

    Good luck to you.

  13. 5Having trouble with verifying my YouTube Channel. I uploaded a free web master SeaMonkey to help with attaching my Meta Tag to my website. It wouldn't completely accept. When clicking on publish, it says fail. The Meta Tag was created with a Meta Tag builder. I want you to know I am doing my best to solve this problem. It gets so confusing to me. I've communicated my problem by leaving comments in others comment sections, hoping to receive help. I don't want you or YouTube to think I'm not trying to verify it. My latest effort as I struggle with this was to create a movie (plead for understanding) directed to YouTube and Google and Ad-sense. The movie is titled "YouTube I'm Not Ignoring You". Please know Google also that when I downloaded the free SeaMonkey program to attach my information to my YouTube Channel, that before it verified, My computer started having trouble. My computer got so it wouldn't start and in order to start it asked to go back to a time when it started better. So when it restored itself I noticed it erased the SeaMonkey program that I was using to insert the information onto my channel. I am now basically starting from the beginning again to verify my channel. I'm not giving up. I am waiting on a family member to hopefully help me through this. Thank you for all your patience with me. Know that your request is not being ignored. I hope the right people will read this message as I don't want to looked down upon when I am doing my best to fulfill this request. Sincerely, Paulette of SPTCPSREN Channel.

  17. The method I find the easiest for validating is doing so with my existing Analytics account, though sometimes I'm not able to and I'm unsure why not. Anyone else experienced that?
