Google Webmaster Central Blog - Official news on crawling and indexing sites for the Google index

Another step to reward high-quality sites

Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 2:45 PM

Webmaster level: All

Google has said before that search engine optimization, or SEO, can be positive and constructive—and we're not the only ones. Effective search engine optimization can make a site more crawlable and make individual pages more accessible and easier to find. Search engine optimization includes things as simple as keyword research to ensure that the right words are on the page, not just industry jargon that normal people will never type.

“White hat” search engine optimizers often improve the usability of a site, help create great content, or make sites faster, which is good for both users and search engines. Good search engine optimization can also mean good marketing: thinking about creative ways to make a site more compelling, which can help with search engines as well as social media. The net result of making a great site is often greater awareness of that site on the web, which can translate into more people linking to or visiting a site.

The opposite of “white hat” SEO is something called “black hat webspam” (we say “webspam” to distinguish it from email spam). In the pursuit of higher rankings or traffic, a few sites use techniques that don’t benefit users, where the intent is to look for shortcuts or loopholes that would rank pages higher than they deserve to be ranked. We see all sorts of webspam techniques every day, from keyword stuffing to link schemes that attempt to propel sites higher in rankings.

The goal of many of our ranking changes is to help searchers find sites that provide a great user experience and fulfill their information needs. We also want the “good guys” making great sites for users, not just algorithms, to see their effort rewarded. To that end we’ve launched Panda changes that successfully returned higher-quality sites in search results. And earlier this year we launched a page layout algorithm that reduces rankings for sites that don’t make much content available “above the fold.”

In the next few days, we’re launching an important algorithm change targeted at webspam. The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines. We’ve always targeted webspam in our rankings, and this algorithm represents another improvement in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high quality content. While we can't divulge specific signals because we don't want to give people a way to game our search results and worsen the experience for users, our advice for webmasters is to focus on creating high quality sites that create a good user experience and employ white hat SEO methods instead of engaging in aggressive webspam tactics.

Here’s an example of a webspam tactic like keyword stuffing taken from a site that will be affected by this change:

Of course, most sites affected by this change aren’t so blatant. Here’s an example of a site with unusual linking patterns that is also affected by this change. Notice that if you try to read the text aloud you’ll discover that the outgoing links are completely unrelated to the actual content, and in fact the page text has been “spun” beyond recognition:

Sites affected by this change might not be easily recognizable as spamming without deep analysis or expertise, but the common thread is that these sites are doing much more than white hat SEO; we believe they are engaging in webspam tactics to manipulate search engine rankings.

The change will go live for all languages at the same time. For context, the initial Panda change affected about 12% of queries to a significant degree; this algorithm affects about 3.1% of queries in English to a degree that a regular user might notice. The change affects roughly 3% of queries in languages such as German, Chinese, and Arabic, but the impact is higher in more heavily-spammed languages. For example, 5% of Polish queries change to a degree that a regular user might notice.

We want people doing white hat search engine optimization (or even no search engine optimization at all) to be free to focus on creating amazing, compelling web sites. As always, we’ll keep our ears open for feedback on ways to iterate and improve our ranking algorithms toward that goal.

it is so easy now for spammer to bring down there competitor website using these "unnatural backlink". they can use senuke x or xrummer on there competitor website to bring them down. there are now forum shows that this "negative seo" really works. google just gave another opportunity for spammer to make money online! war will begin between webmaster bombarding each other using senuke x and xrummer.

Please folks give more facts and less emotion. For all those who are screaming about fashion-baby.info I agree it should not be number one for anything and is in bad taste.

But do not threaten to go to Bing because they are pure. Go to bing I just did a search for the term fashion baby. Guess what Number #1 there too.

Google has destroyed my business too. Give Google more facts you never know they may be realizing they did not do well with this update.

Its interesting that google have become judge , jury and executioner on websites , who says that they should decide what is good quality content and what isn't.Google can't even get their ranking without buying links so why should they judge others , surely what is good quality content to a 15 year old is complete garbage to a 30 year old . I think google need to get back to what they were good at , which is been a simple search engine at the beck and call of the user , not the other way round where they tell us what we should search for , what they recommend and what they want us to read .

Hmm funny, I have biggest drop only at one domain. For it I installed even webmaster tools on it. And I take a look what is going on with links to my site

My pages are coppied all overe the net, a lot of people thinked that my content is so good that they add it as posts on their own sites. I noticet few dozens of them which simply coppied everything (including links in articles) as their own content (agregators are there also, but I do not think it is main problem) and now what I can do ?

It is perfect that my content is so valuable that people are stealing it like crazy. It is horrible that I am penalized for it at search engine :( I am almost 100 per cent sure, that this is a reason of penalization because no other sites are like this one. But I have no chance to fight against it :(

Take a look, quote from my one article
"Lidé ve znamení Střelce přistupují k životu velmi energicky"

1st result my category page
my most important content page is somwhere on 20th position

before it are all thiefs which simply coppied what I wrote even few years after I add MY content online

as you can see, I do not fight for some commercial crap and quotes about making money or other bullshit. I just showing that something is totally wrong with new algorithm. Content thiefs that copy whole content of someone site (not only few lines of feed) are now much higher than original - and even in 20 coppies

Many of my sites disappeared by their own names after this update. Many of my site names are absolutely unique words and it proves that it can't mean anything else instead of my sites. So when people search for my sites they don't see relevant results now. So not only I am unhappy but many my visitors also. I don't understand how this update cound improve a quality of a Google Search. May be an overal quality is better, I can't check it. But in my case surfers are unhappy and I'm unhappy.

Hi Matt

We have been working hard to build high quality site with lots of great content and user interaction with different media (podcasts, video, JomSocial ect)for project and programme managers with good on-page such as rich snippets and fresh content every day. Everyone in the Project Management community seems to love it and everytime to tweak the algorithm PANDA, Penguin and the other we seem to jump up a bit higher in the rankings. Its good to know that a small start up can rank above the big brands by providing good content and a website we care about. Keep up the good work.

Unreal! I have a niche product line and tons of needed associated info. Built a great deep website 10 years ago, update here and there, and have always been in the top 3 on all search engines. Folks who are looking for my type products & info have very few choices and need to find my site!

I got a call from a SEO company last week and gave them my usual line that I didn't need their "tactics" because I was 1st page google. He said I wasnt? I had noticed a big drop in traffic/sales recently. I guess I am lucky to be at the bottom of page 2 results now? Like others posters, I see no content or irrelevant listings are now page 1.

Beware Google! When Joe Blow can't find what he REALLY wants, he will switch to other search engines. I have built many websites for others and lauded Google for all these years. I can't believe this search update and wonder what is really behind it. Greed I feel sure..

I noticed that along with this update there was a PR update too. I saw that my site's main PR is less that some internal page PR (such us contact us page). Is this something to do with my site or it is because of the new algorithm?

It is strange because higher PR page in my site have less content and obviously much less or none backlinks.

My main site that has pages and pages of laboriously created content about our local area to help our guests has tanked but my competitors who just have pages advertising accommodation are thriving after this update. I daren't link to my site here unless I get ANOTHER penalty :-( At least Bing still shows sensible and helpful results for our main searches phrases. I never thought I'd say it but I might have to start using Bing as Google just became pretty useless to me and my guests.

What a FAIL!

Create good content that gets picked up by all kinds of blogs via article directories and we get penalized because the links don't come from a "relevant" site.

We do a good job of letting users know what the link is about by using proper anchor text.

Now Matt says they want more "Click here" links. Really?

If we publish good content and it gets picked by various sites, we can't control it, but we get penalized for it.

I don't use BMR or any bogus site, don't keyword stuff or use deceptive linking. It's all white hat, but one of my sites got KILLED in the update.

Google screwed the pooch on this. They did not think this through.

Using their new criteria, we could go out and kill our competitors by with spammy links, or someone could do that to us, which SUCKS!

Kill the update!!!

Matt said...

I'm all for shutting down the pure spam websites, but there are two aspects of all this that are worrying. The first is the self-centered view that everything webmasters do is all about Google, and the second, that people know exactly what they're looking for when they go online.

For years I've swapped links with other websites that I believed my visitors might find useful ... we catered to a similar audience/interests so quite often they linked back. Presumeably that's useful for visitors to both our sites, but now we get penalised for it?

I've also built lots of links from all over the place to direct traffic to my websites, starting back before Google even existed. That's now considered spam ... even though we get a good portion of our visitor traffic from those kinds of links.

The main theme of my websites is photography, and people looking for virtually any 'subject' are quite often interested in seeing images of that subject. Google acknowledges this by adding 'images' results to their search page, but I have to cop a quality penalty if I have links on non-photography website?

Penalising linking like this shows a lack of understanding by Google of how their people use the internet. Could you imagine how dull the web would be if no one was game link to another site, or let another site link to them, for fear of Google deeming it irrelevant and penalising them?

They call it 'web browsing' for a reason, and half the joy of the internet is finding stuff by accident. It's not always about search and it's not all about Google.

I want to give one example for better understanding. I have created one static content block on my category page. I have created hyperlink to WikiPedia pages which is providing information to users about specific words.

Does it really matter to create hyperlink on external source which have very different subject to existence website?

I'm not talking about web spam but, talking about subject selection procedure to develop hyperlink on specific page.

What you think about it?

What if you are in a niche??

It seems that Google has penalised sites where a high percentage of anchor text links that contain the same phrase. I have the largest specialist all inclusive holiday website in the UK with 1200 pages of unique content dedicated to all inclusive holidays. Included in those pages are destination guides, one of which is dedicated to All Inclusive Holidays in Turkey.

Not surprisingly most of the links to this page have the anchor text 'all inclusive holidays to turkey'. This is good sensible English. We don't sell 'cheap holidays in turkey' or offer 'turkey holiday deals' and so these phrases don't appear in anchor text links to my page.

Because of this, my turkey page had dropped like a stone from position 1 to position 19 and generic holiday websites rank above presumably because their anchor text links are more varied?

I really don't know what we can do as we are such a specialist?? (suggestions are welcome!)

First of all, thank you to Google webmasters tools has allowed us to better understand the current situation.

Our understanding has clearly an impact on the algorithm Penguin execution and impacts for sites.

We found through Google' tools two sites pointing to abuse on our home page. These are sites on recherche-sur-internet.com updowner.com. More than 4500 links in total!

We have made no such request. It would be completely stupid. These links are dishonest, unjustified, and aggressive.

The penguin algorithm developed by Google fight spam. It's a good thing. The difficulty is spam (external link) orquestred by malicious people from external sites. It then becomes possible to generate a large number of links to a specific site in order to kill it by disrupting its natural indexing.

In which case, the algorithm Penguin can become a weapon for people seeking to destroy relevant sites from competitors.

It would probably have to validate such strange links (high number from a same site) with the webmaster of the attacked site.

The key issue for us now are:

1. how to get rid of these negative links from recherche-sur-internet.com updowner.com?
2. how to prove our honesty to be fair to Google?
3. how to have ww.france-camping-car.fr to be rehabilitated in the indexing engine Google?
4. how to avoid being bombarded with new links to our site through a site that aims to harm us?

These questions are probably valid for other sites and webmasters.

We hope that these comments are useful in improving your tools. We remain at your disposal to help you in improving Google tools.

I've been checking my website that's been penalised by this update over the last week and trying to be objective about this.

This is a legitimate b2b services website. As far as I'm aware I've done nothing that would trigger this penalty and I received non of the GWT spam warning messages that were supposedly sent out prior to the update.

Here's what I've found:

Say my website sells only "blue and grey striped widgets", nothing else. My site was ranking top 3 for this highly relevant keyword phrase and it was converting well. The update completely annihilated my site for this keyword phrase (from top 3 to pg 30, hidden in the supplemental index). However, it seems to have given a boost to more generic phrase that are clearly less relevant, for example:

"widgets" (seems to have got a boost, showing on pg 1 now) - Clearly only a small percentage of people searching for this term want "blue and grey striped widgets".

It seems quite clear to me that this is doing the exact opposite of what these updates were supposed to do...provide BETTER, more relevant results for the searcher.

Alihoco said...

This is the exact same issue we face. We sell a specific niche product in travel and now jack of all trades rank better than us for our niche phrases despite having far fewer relevant products - surely this just has to be wrong...?

That's great in theory and all. But the problem is the product of your latest update has left uncompelling, blank sites at the top.

Has it ever occurred to anyone at google that those who invest time and money in building focused links also spend time and money on user experience and fulfillment? Or is this idealism at it's finest. Put the magnifying glass no the ants and burn them one at a time. While the crap rises to the top.

I own a few sites that have been established longer than Google that have had top rankings for 5-7 years for dozens of keyword searches that have been wiped out and replaced with results from bigger brands that are even less relevant. Literally thousands of hours of hard work and other resources invested over the last 10 year down the drain. I understand the need to combat web spam but to many legitimate business owners are being harmed in this crossfire.

Hi Geo Traveller,

I believe your site was penalized because you have links to TripAdvisor which is perfect for your visitors in order to find hotels and flights but NOT for google.

google only understands adsense and adwords. stop.

If I were you I would move your site to another platform: wordpress etc importing all your content from blogspot which is a outdated platform (with a ugly navbar).

Then, add a nofollow to TripAdvisor and any other links.

And don't forget to remove your google analytics, webmaster tools etc, as less info google has about your website much better for you ;)

I own almost 75 websites including some big websites, niche blogs and micro niche blogs, i spent almost 3 days to collect data of my blogs did comparison and anaysis and found and noticed from recent google penguin update that google is penalizing those who have mass backlinks (more than 200) with domain's age less than 1 year, one the other hand google is ranking micro niche websites with long tail keywords very fast with quality contents even without having a single backlink.

I was surprised when i checked one of my newly developed micro niche blog having domain age only 41 days without any backlink, but i wrote unique contents and submit it to google and today i saw it is ranking on first page of google after competing almost 7900 allintitle pages. (Great Google)

But i have been penalized for couple of my blogs because of having mass backlinks and i came to know that i use Senuke x, LinkWheels, bulk article submissions and profile backlinks previous months on these blogs , so google penalized me for these and unlink all the backlinks from my google webmaster tools account for these two blogs and i am nowhere on google for these blogs and their keywords(Bad me not Google, because i did in wrong way)

Conclusion: Do not focus on link building but focus on quality of contents and create micro niche websites to be focus on the topic and link all your inner pages and articles to your home page with(www.yourdomain.com). Your all inner pages should point to your home page with your focus main theme keyword just do it and you will see the progress, i did same in last month and i achieved great reults even with penguin update.

Everybody tells that Google is wrong with this last upate, but i will prove it with some wrong search results examples !
Google , we want a press release where you admit your mistake or you announce a new update soon.
Don't let us fire all our employees and close our quality websites , say something about this !
Examples:
1. Web Hosting
Website - www.xeromi.net

2. Viagra
Website - www.montgomery.edu

3. New Shoes
Website - Youtube Video Song
Website - www.interpretive.com/rd5/index.php?pg=ns

When i search for new shoes , i want some shoes stores to appear in search results , not songs and marketing campaigns names ! Incredible !!!

4. Best Web Hosting
Website - www.bestwebhosting.com

This website is created by a 4 years old i think !

5. Ambien
Website - http://www.kidsoc.org

An website that has nothing to do with Ambien :)) !

Those are only 5 examples ! I know another 20 examples in my country and a lot more on google.com !
Why do you run this update google ? Do you want people to pay for adwords ? Or what is your interest ? They will pay for a while , but after that you are broke !
Are you on long-term or short-term !
Will Google be for sale ?
We want a press release soon !

Where do you start?? Google has great intentions - YES, Googles changes worked - NO, Googles Panda is sick - YES, Googles Panda is dead - NO, which means they still have time to fix it! They should worry less about punishing and more about rewarding based on CONTENT, Uniqueness (being human readable - not just spin junk) and leave the junky article and blog post problems to the respective site owners. Backlinks, as with old meta tags should not be the primary rating of a site, just a part of it.

I'm an in-house SEO and we stick to completely white hat techniques. But, obviously, this means experimenting with different amounts of keywords per page, images per page (optimized), and experimenting with other elements like link building and content sharing... I am having trouble deciphering a possible penguin slap from the seasonality of search queries. What is the average percentage of search visits lost on a site that has been penalized by penguin?

Tole said...

I've been hit by a spammer and negative seo. I am not SEO professional or expert, I have few sites for a hobby, so it took me a quite time to realize what actually happened.

I have site about niche which started in December 2010. I created my site some 3 months latter. Site was growing as interest for niche was growing and there were several thousands of user contributed, related comments.

But in the middle of the March this year, it slightly dropped (10-15%). 3 weeks later it dropped like a bomb - 5 times less visitors than before! From 2,500 to 500 visits/day.

At one point there was a malicious software warning on my pages too. I could not spot anything so I thought it was a bug in Google algorithm.
When a malicious software warning came on again (week or two latter), i took it more serious. I knew that someone is hitting on me.

Then I showed my webmasters tools to some of my more experienced friends - they looked into "Links to your site" and whoila: askives.com, wiki.gov.cn, yaodiy.com.cn, ratoomp3.com and hundred of simmilar domains!

I checked the some popular search phrases for my niche and found few keyword based domains that were registered in midd march, they are standing up at first place. Whats more, for those keywords, guy is having almost 50% percent of results from first two pages! Yes, he opened blogs on wordpres, blogspot, tumblr ... and all of them are cross linked and are talking about nothing.

Now when I look at it: it seems that it was incredibly easy how he ruined my site and how he poluted niche with no use spam.

Don't know what to say anymore.
Hope you'll fix it somehow. It was realy too easy!

My site has 1800 pages of good original content, but about more or less the same topic, because THATS WHAT THE SITE IS ABOUT! Now in its place at the top is a 5 page, 3 year old site which is an advert, and we are number 10. And thats progress? Google you are assh*les. You are a search engine, NOT god. You have wiped out 9 years of hard work, probably my income, and my life. Cheers. The rivals who posted spam against us, dont have webmaster tools installed. They do however have loads of spun content, spam pages, links from spam comments and spun article networks, and you dont penalise them? So the bad guys always win now? So should i pay someone to spam blast their site? Is that the done thing now? Oh ok. Thats progress. I hope my reconsideration request gets accepted.

Hi Matts,

Personally, I think your previous Panda update was better in terms of search quality compared to what is now.

Piggy backing authority sites do not really give the best user experience always. In most cases these sites have good content but certainly not exhaustive to really help the user experience.

Example: When I search for "window blinds" the first result which comes up is to do with a Windows desktop software to create screen saver patterns. LOL!

I think the effort should be more towards search relevancy than "spam linkers". Not be to do away with those sites which might have used semi spam techniques but still have great content to woo users.

Relying on just the biggy sites like bbc, cnn and the web2.0 sites will certainly give good insight to the topic I want to search on.

Google poisons it own search well?

The commercial tensions of turning a buck have perhaps skewed Google's intentions of providing a better search experience for users, to one of placing commercial sites who are paying them to place their sites higher in the rankings.

The US Government and the EU look very unfavourably at a monopoly company that 'abuses' its pre-eminent position e.g. Microsoft has been brought to heel by both legislatures.

As business owners are penalized and users find irrelevant search terms they will move a way from Google (way of the DODO springs to mind for a search engine that can't find relevant stuff)

Perhaps people who use Chrome should switch to another browser and move away from Googles tentacles.

Perhaps using Google Analytics and Webmaster tools is damaging your site.

Perhaps Google is not positioning your site in it's search engines because you didn't pay enough for top spot? - perhaps this could be seen by lawmakers as a form of racketeering/extortion?

Only Google knows, and only Google cares - the new CEO came from Paypal - perhaps monetization at the big G now takes a higher position than "a good user experience"

Making Monet online - google vilifies a lot of Internet Marketers for their approach - yet Google operates in an arbitrary fashion with no oversight.

If I was a small business, had set up my business - no spam etc and because of this algo change my income was adversely effected, then I would take out a lawsuit for detrimental loss of earnings on my business.

Google can't have it both ways, they can't be the last bastion of open user search, while at the same time penalizing genuine business.

Interesting times - I just feel for people who are trying to make a living in the World recession, while eggheads at the Big G tamper with peoples lives.

Probably Matt will read this comment. Normally someone perform a search for getting some "information".
RIGHT?
Ok, if you are the one, who think so, then you are wrong completely. Internet has taken a wide shape (i know you know this). People don't want just info but more things also.
FOR EG. when someone is searching for "how to cook shit" he really want some info about cooking something but what is someone is searching for "buy shit"?

Is he really searching for a wikipedia url which tell him what is shit and what can you do with a shit?

Results are real shit.
Penguin tried to kill sites those had over-anchor optimization + lots of spammmy links built using spun content.
BUT how about someone, who is sitting at rank 14 and now he can spam first 13 results and get a nice ranking for a nice keyword?

Yeah, this is not possible to make things completely perfect. When panda approached, it also did show a few bad results and one can not expect a perfect result for each and every query but currently most of the terms are screwd.

search "payday loans" in US and UK.

A very big term and check, who is ranking and WHY!!!!!

Google, you can not show all 10 paid listings on page 1.
RIGHT? stop pissing off webmasters.
Wikipedia is not going to open a "baby gifts" shop.
CNN, about.com and every big site is not going to offer shoes, gifts and payday loans.
Whats the point of having "INFORMATIVE HI AUTHORITY SITES" on top?

Do you want us to stop selling stuffs via internet?
HOW can a legit website of "shoes" can have a hell of content on it when it simply does not need it?

No need to favor authority sites unless someone is searching for "how to ++" or anything similar to that.

Go to blackhat forums and check, what people talking there.

Look at your results, its gone SHITTY really.

Search in Google.co.uk for payday loans.

The site you highlighted in your update is owned by a guy who has dozens of other sites and who spams a new site to the top every other week.

He's at no.1 right now, and has probably 10 other sites in the first 3 to 4 pages of results.

Possibly worse than that is that in position 9 on page 1 is a website about Orchids (yes that's right, nothing to do with payday loans), which opens pop ups to spammy roulette software.

And of course there's the other guy using equally devious means to spam his sites to no.1 for a very competitive keyword and he's a known conman.

His site at no.1 disappears from the results, and within a week he's got a brand new one there.

In fact he also has 3 sites in the first 2 pages of results.

There's a great big loophole in the middle of the algorithm, and what you've just attempted to do hasn't fixed it.

In fact it's punished a lot of okay sites, and the bad boys are just carrying on as normal.

You really need to take a fresh approach and instead of being site focused be link focused.

If you work backwards from a site you've identified as spamming/cheating, identify all of the backlinks to it, and revalue ALL links from those pages (or sites) as worth ZERO.

Then they can't just 301 their way around your site based penalty.

The approach you've taken has entered you into a never ending battle that you can never win - and the collateral damage is way too high.

There is also COWARDICE! I posted in Webmasters Tools Central, Crawling & Indexing. My message was related to the latest Penguin debacle. I made an “organic” reference to another debacle: The Florida update of 2003.

“Google Panda/Penguin Updates: Florida Update Redivivus”

But why was my post deleted? Other posters use much harsher words… I “tink” I used a very intelligent word that might attract the attention of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The concept in focus is MONEY-WORDS.

After the Florida update, commercial pages were dropped or, at least, moved way down the rankings. Most webmasters and SEO experts realized immediately that Google was maintaining a list of "money-words". Based on that greedy list, the non-commercial (informative) sites were listed at the very top of search results. Meanwhile, all commercial sites were most likely dropped from the first 10 or so result-pages.

Clearly, the intent was to force commercial sites into advertising (Google AdWords), thusly allowing Google to make a lot more money.

Google survived the Florida update mainly because Yahoo and MSN were even more stupid than Google. Based on that experience, Google revived Florida through two zombic incarnations: Panda and Penguin.

MONEY-WORDS, the Internet Zombies, are back!

You can't get any more original content than what I have.

How is it you can't tell the difference from my original content and what the thieves regurgitate? Are you serious?" (end of qote)

... I could have just simply replaced the URL with my own website URL at MedicalAssistant.net = published in 2002, and the first, most relevant, expert written, original subject matter content, sought and quoted website for medical assistants - copied, rewritten, spun, and regurgitated by competitors almost to a "T". Nevertheless, we have been hammered.

It is frustrating and outrageous.

Facebook commiserating with Google?! I posted a thread on my Facebook. The comment I made relative to PIRACY/PLAGIARISM was deleted …

II. (Who da hell deleted part II of my commentary? It is about PIRACY/PLAGIARISM, and Google relies heavily of those acts!!!)

The question is WHY am I so interested in all this search debacle? Because I want the world to know me and my ideas, my programs. Why should only the likes of Wikipedia know about me, and then pirate my ideas?! In fact, Google rewards them with the position #1 in search results!

Last week I discovered another act of piracy … at Google, of course. I tried a search related to probability in the new cranky Google. I saw listed quite high a Google Blog page that sounded a lot like one of my Web pages. In fact, the entire blog copied my page word by word! I published that page before Google or Wikipedia were born! Google removed the piracy after I filed an official complaint.

But how insane! Google rewards piracy, while my original page was nowhere to be found! Many authors complain about the same thing! The piracy is rewarded, while the legitimate authors are punished! I’ve discovered a few acts of piracy/plagiarism of my work … by searching on Google. They list the pirates very highly, on the 1st or 2nd results-page.

And there is NO penalty for the pirates. Their pages are simply deleted … but they go on and pirate again!

VII. This is the action of piracy-removal by Google Blog Team (May 11, 2012):

“Thanks for reaching out to us.

In accordance with the DMCA, we have completed processing your infringement complaint and the content in question no longer appears on the following URL(s):

http://smartmathematics.blogspot.com/2009/05/mathematics-of-fundamental-formula-of.html

Please let us know if we can assist you further.”

Google, assist me and all legitimate authors by COMBATING PIRACY. Your indexing software knows what Web page was published first. Then, it is easy to spot the piracy/plagiarism criminals and report them to the U.S. government based on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

Another great step by Google. Some of my sites were affected by this penguin update, and this has really reminded me of what I should be doing.

After the panda update last year, I edited my affected site and after that I got my rank back and it got better and better.

Ion Saliu said...

@kidneyhealthfan:

Chances are good you are a Google MOLE!

People would have no important things to do other then participating in the insanity actions imposed by Google. Always changes for the worse, as I exemplified in my real case of piracy.

What Google considers a “good practice” today, Google makes it a bad practice tomorrow — and vice versa! No other Internet company does that — because they don’t have the position of a MONOPOLY! Only a monopoly can act with impunity. But only for a limited time (that might measure in years).

The democracies have ANTI-MONOPOLY LAWS for good reasons. Competition is good, while monopolies are bad for the consumer.

So, what you said might be true ONLY if you are a pirate. The Penguin update greatly improved ranking of the piracy-sites, while drastically penalizing the legitimate authors and the sites with original content. And it was all done based on the greedy (and illegal) practice of MONEY-WORDS…

ForexAbode.com said...

Google has to do it's job and we need to ours. The end objective is same and that is to offer better contents to people who need that.

While saying this, I somehow feel that things are getting more complicated as Google may be seeing things more from the webmasters' point of view i.e. punishing/rewarding and all and in that the real importance of contents may be getting lost. What if an unintentional SEO related error is there with some great contents?

My personal experience has been a bit confusing. Panda came and nothing changed for us. Penguin came and agains some pages were a bit up and some a bit down and overall a normal situation but the confusing part is that 8 great pages which used to come on the first page for some good search terms and which are liked by the visitors mose, disappeared from the searches altogether.

Now these 8 pages are those which are:

1) Liked by the users most.
2) These have analysis which is updated every week and the time spent in the updates ranges from 50 to 70 hours a month and hence original and fresh content.

Some pages which may not be so important and updated regularly or attract the visitors attention so much may be keeping the same search rankings but the better ones get affected.

Well, hope that some better logics can guilt into the whole game we all can work for the end objective to serve the people with what they may be looking for.

Best regards
P.S.: If anybody wants to have a look, the pages I talked about are weekly outlook of 8 currency pairs and the pages are http://www.forexabode.com/forex-forecast/eur-usd and so on (the last eur-usd will be replaced for other currency pairs)

Not only does AMAZON control the #1 ranking on GOOGLE for "books", it is #1 for almost every english word from "jewelry boxes" to "XXX" and "sex toys".

What Does This Mean?

GOOGLE and AMAZON have cleverly manipulated you, the average person, into a direct buying path for basically every product in the world killing off their competition. Google controls 70% of all search online which now means AMAZON controls 70% of all online purchases. THAT' IS ALOT OF MONEY!

It is rank #5 on Keyword- panax. A VERY tough competitive keyword.

Look also at this EXERCISE IN INSANITY. Most people know about PANAX. It is the scientific name of GINSENG, a very popular herb, with a very long tradition in the Chinese medicine. Ginseng is now used all over the world. Therefore, the search term PANAX is also hugely popular, competitive, and lucrative.

Do a panax search in the Penguin madhouse. A site named www.panax.com/ is listed very high. That website is clearly a nothing-site; it has nothing to do with panax (ginseng). Absolute spam! It has a section named Your Panax, with subsections like Weather and Games! Have you ever played the Panax Game? Google has…

Have you filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission? I have … ‘cuz I take PANAX daily … I got balls …

Although I am not directly impacted by your mess, I have switched to the competition because my search results are what they should be with Google anymore. When searching for a fix for my computer,I found a blog with no content, a site with a banned PayPal account and almost caught a virus. My favorite sites where no where to be found. Prior to April, there were all there. I went to the competition and Bam, there they were. Sorry Matt, but I have to switch to the competition. I know of thousands doing the same. You guys have a mess on your hands.

Hi Matt. We are the authors of a lot of original content on the web about health and detoxing. We have been writing for about 10 years, are experts in the field, and used to be number one in google Australia for many keywords. Our website is http://detox.net.au . Over the years a lot of people have copied our content and reposted it, we also reposted some other peoples content for our readers convenience also. We never engaged in any black hat stuff, and we never wrote nonsense either. However our site has been hit badly by panda and penguin, and now even the sites that reposted our content rank above us for even phrase match searches. Is this fair? Many of the sites outranking us don't even understand what they reposted. Could you please fix this somehow, I understand we should not rank for stuff we copied from somewhere (about 15% of our content), yet we should rank for our own content, right?

Sorry Google, but you had the right idea, but really screwed up big time. The results since April 26 are just shocking. I'm finding myself using Bing, if you can believe that. For a query relating to prisons in the US, in the number two spot you showed me an obscure thread on a forum about UFO's and conspiracy theories. Number 5 was an article from 4 years ago in the NY Times. Also making the Top 10 was a 'Coming Soon' website. My own site was destroyed by this update - not because I am a web spam guy but because unscrupulous SEO companies that I hired wrote spun articles with irrelevant content and linked to my site. I asked them to remove it and they don't reply. Why do you penalize me for the actions of others and haven't you opened the door for a Wild West of negative SEO where everyone is attacking their competitors with web spam???

You need to admit that you screwed this one up, go back to pre-Penguin results, regroup and come at this again from another angle.

I apologize in advance if this sounds completely and utterly ignorant, as I do not design websites or anything like that. I do however belong to a large market place platform where I sell vintage stuff and on April 24 my shop absolutely flat lined. I have read on that site how to re-write titles, tags etc. to no avail. My question is, why would several 100 shops flat line and others not ? Would this be shop specific or site specific, since it is not my site, I am a page, or store, on this site. And how do I become visible again out in the web world? Do I optimize my page according to GOOGLE? I have no access to meta tags etc. so I can't keyword that to death, so I am at a loss as to who I optimize for, my parent site or Google? Thanks for taking the time to read this and answer if you see fit.

travelagent said...

RE: Place Holder
The other sites like yours that are ranking, more than likely have many quality links pointing to them. I would look in to doing some back linking, getting sites that are relevant to yours to link back to yours. But be careful, not to get links from spam sites like blog networks. I have the same type of site, in sorts. It is all mine to SEO on, but I have content from travel wholesalers that links to a check out. I had dropped from having about 100 keywords on page one to about 5.

I hired an SEO person From Odesk.com to do some research on my site and found that I had a link from a blog network. that one dropped me to page 3-4 and 5. I contacted the site and got them to take it off, and my ranking is going back up.

The funny thing is, I had only commented on an article that was posted about Caribbean travel! I did no spamming, did not use my keywords as my name or in my comment. the site itself was a spammers site and I had no idea! So far this one website has cost me about $10,000.00 So be very careful, But if you get good quality back links from like minded sites you should do pretty good at getting your ranking back, and make sure you don't have any blog network back links pointing to your site.

I hope this helps!

feeture.me said...

I agree with Martin who said;

"well now more rubbish results appearing in search than before. more exact domain name match results and unrelated websites . Google failed once again."

This is another fail, not just more domain matches but more site ranking on domain age also.

This isn't about better results (because they aren't) it's about wiping out SEO and forcing more people to use AdWords, plain and simple.

Matt, why not, like having a +1 button have a report button for users to report spammy sites?

Rather than trying to police the search results with an algo why not leave it to the users?

After a certain amount of reports the site would be flagged for manual revision.

Whatever this update has done it's doing more harm than good.

My traffic dropped 30% since the update. However my main keywords were wedding photographers (dropped 3 pages) and wedding photography (dropped 28 pages).

But this is what I offer, I have a huge blog and what I would consider great and relative content but in Google analytics my search terms never bring any results as I'm now too far down the page.

SiteTruth said...

This is a fascinating discussion. Clearly there's been forward progress, since the web spammers are screaming. The problem is that, having reduced the value of links, Google now seems to lack a reasonable way to rank commercial sites. The results near the top of web search are now rather random. As others have pointed out, one of the best ways to get a high ranking is to hack a .EDU site. (One part of Google detects and reports that the site has been hacked, but that doesn't feed into search ranking. Search for "viagra" for an example.

Arguably, where this is going is a search engine where commercial sites appear primarily in ads. Organic search shows primarily non-commercial content. This might not be a bad thing, at least for anything in the top 10,000 searches.

Another direction is to use more "social" inputs. That tends to backfire, as social spamming is not only cheap and easy, but causes collateral damage to social networks. The October 2011 debacle with Google Local made local spamming mainstream SEO, and social signals had to be reduced in value. That just made the social spammers try harder. (See my paper "Social is bad for search, and search is bad for social", submitted to DEFCON.)

We (SiteTruth.com) look at the business background of the company, and down-rate questionable companies in our browser add-ons used to improve web search. The idea is to use business legitimacy as a signal. No established physical presence or corporate existence means a lower ranking. It's not yet feasible for Google to do this, because Google gets 30% of its ad revenue from AdSense sites. Our approach would improve search but would cut Google's revenue by 8%. However, as Google tightens the screws on junk sites, we would expect AdSense revenue to decrease while AdWords revenue increases. In time, using business background as a signal may have potential for Google. Meanwhile, Google has competitors.

I do not have a message on Google wabmester tools - yet my rankings are dropping more every week I check

today they are

suit stand 34
clothes valet 44
suit valet 53
clothes valet stand 59
valet stand 64
men's valet 89
clothing valet 92
mens valet 93

I have tried to call, email, forms
everything and no response

are there any groups forming against this update?

something is wrong here and Im one of the many victims

If Google is going to ignore us then we need to find a way to assemble and help fight against the abuse of their control and participate in the anti-trust issues.

I have read that 3 of the board of directors on Google are from Amazon - that makes sense as to why Amazon came out on top

I am very bitter against Google not only for there actions - but for then turning there backs on legitimate small businesses that have worked hard over the years

Great that you are making changes, but two problems:

1. Companies that have numerous duplicate sites are still ranking well (see: www.work-comp.info, www.illinoisworkinjury.com, www.illinoisworkinjuryattorney.com, bradleydworkinattorney.com, www.carpaltunnellawyer.com).

2. Sites that stuff keywords in to the URL are dominating if the search terms match which seems lazy.

Finally, while I know you can't address everyone, there's no explanation given for why someone goes from top 3 in the results to the 2nd or 3rd page. That doesn't seem like a punishment, but doesn't help us figure out what we've done wrong. Can you offer some site analysis program for webmasters?

toscoman said...

This was a disaster! Informational sites totally gone, fake "search engines" with all of their results indexed and ranking high so that their adsense adverts get clicked more. Sites that scape google's own results ranked high so their adsense adverts are clicked, fake site analysis sites ranked higher than the sites they supposedly analyse (meaning scrape metatags and in some cases the entire content).

toscoman said...

Another negative effect is that now we see the same website in positions 1, 2, 3 for a single search. Surely once is enough?

Seems very large websites win, meaning that major scrapers always rank higher than the normal-sized sites from which they scape their content.

Penguin reinforces spammers to dominate top spots on SERPs. Many times you can see 5-6 links from the same site listed on SERPs and all are low-quality websites. This is a big failure of this algorithm.

Hello Matt & Google Team,

I would like to address the concern that a lot of online businesses are raising with you about spam directories and some of the black hat tactics that are draining legitimate businesses resources.

Every day we have to issue spam reports when we identify another unsavory site is linking back to us and inform Google we want to be removed off the spam site.

There has got to be a better way than businesses having to regularly update spam reports, especially because of the rel = author codes updated on web pages advising Google who owns the original content.

My question to your team is why isn't the rel=author code working to stop spam sites directing our content links onto their sites? Why are businesses having to fight to get these links removed from scraper and spam sites?

We are fighting an unfair war. The spam sites at this stage alway work around the algorithm updates.

Black hat seo just moves onto the next way of manipulating SEO.

Foresight in social network linking would also be helpful, because this is also being manipulated by affiliate networks and spam sites.

Thank you.

I am not sure how Google measures success but I do know the Penguin update is not a success.

Google search results are whack! Today I searched "piggybacking savings account".

The search resulted in ehow.com 1 time on page 1; ehow 4 times on page 2; and ehow 7 times on page 3! None of which included what I was searching for.

Needless to say I gave up on page 3 results as the 12 ehow articles Google returned were ALL SIMILAR and had NOTHING to do with my original search.

Is there some new partnership between Google and Ehow? Penguin is like a science project gone horribly wrong. Big Fail!

Google Penguin update rewards scrapper sites and stolen content. Creditvisionary.com is definitely a scrapper site consisting of nothing but copyrighted content and they come up first and multiple times for searches related to credit.

The articles where the content was stolen from don't even rank! For example: "what is the frca compliance date" or "what is the e-oscar method of investigation" the scrapper site is no. 1 on Google even though you are re-directed to the site's homepage.

Of course, the scrapper site uses another Google product, "Blogspot" which also contains nothing but stolen content.

Yeah, Penguin is a real success -- for cheaters that is.

They never reply. I feel my page rank and my place in the search results is affected because I find that the copied post is higher than me in the search results! Sites with virtually no information or information listing very old information are listed (along with sites with only links and very little unrelated stuff) are highly listed in the listings - my site (www.graphicxtras.com) gets nowhere however many times I update the pages and add new material.

Guess as my site gets no 'natural' links .. as an e-commerce site, why would it? the site will probably always now be on page 10 or 20 etc.

Really don't think the listings are now showing just great content - a lot of nothing is also being displayed still and sites actually producing things are not being listed well

What I take from this and its comments is: I'm glad I am an idiot about this SEO stuff. It means Google can't get me, probably. It means the people who come to my site are people who know they are looking for it, and know when they have found it, without a middleman's adverse interest disrupting the exchange. I was going to pay for this optimization stuff. Reading this, I have decided it's like the mob's protection rackets: We protect you from us.

My little site (http://TarotVerbatim.com) has at least fifty regular visitors, sports at least three comments a day that are not my replies to others' comments, has an 80% return rate, and I THINK (because I don't know how to check) it has less than a hundred total visits a day ... not sure. See ... this they cannot take away from me.

I am an entertaining and brilliant writer. My site has at least 600 words a day of new content that ... relevant! - it's about what YOUR day will be like today. How more relevant than that can you get? You can even absorb 'how to do it' by just visiting often. It has no SEO because I don't know what that is, not really.

It is unaffected, as much as I can tell, by Google's reordering of the universe.

You MUST have love and defend the BIG CORPORATION above all else, even your family and family values

You MUST side with all other BIG corporations and helping them wipe out all the little guys

You MUST do all in your power to make the little guy pay for ADWORDS and Google Services. This is your primary objective.

You MUST read the 10 Google commandments

KNOW GOOGLE is GOD and no one else is important.

How's this for some unreal Google SERPs:

Yesterday morning I published a new blog post titled 'Increasing Importance of Social Media to SMEs'

When I searched using the exact title in the evening it was on page one position one on Google. That would have been expected as the search term is quite a long tail, and it's in the the Meta Title and Description as per good SEO practices.

Today, however the post is nowhere to be seen! WTF?!

All I can see now are my listings from other websites such as BizSugar, LinkedIn, Bloggers, Twitter, Quora etc.

I usually post the URL's of my new blog articles to Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Digg, StumbleUpon, Blogger, BizSugar, Quora etc. I also upload the main images w. descriptions to Pinterest and Flickr. This is mainly to do some PR for them and get additional traffic. (Is this wrong BTW?)

So, can anyone tell me why is my original blog post gone from the Google SERPs so quickly? Or at least not found within the first 25-50 pages?

Does it have something to do with my postings to other websites which have better Google Page ranks than my blog? (Currently PR 2 as I changed the domain 6 months ago.)

Even a page titled 'Badges for the Rock Your Biz Blogging event on BizSugar' comes before my original post!

What is happening? And what can be done?

Post Penguin:

search this term "ice vending machines"

Now this business "Kooler Ice"

now has anywhere from 2-3 pages on 1st page, some of which are duplicate content/websites pointing back to main website www.koolerice.com

what gives?

Duplicate site: www.icevendingmachines.org
sub page: www.koolerice.com/ice-machines/

then main page: www.koolerice.com

"google first three results are crap" finds more stuff every day. Nasty stuff you guys are putting at the top of the search page. Sites that say they are the login link for online banking -- but they're not.

What the hey, is there a tool available to block the first three results? Because they're crap.

Thanks Matt,

1) Brodened the ADS On top so it takes all the screen space.
2) Lightened the color and made it bright so it catches the eye and user clicks on it.
3)Call to action + Call options+ Sitewide Keywords on ads

4) Every 3rd day some new update.

SEO RIP....You won

Google released an update aimed at the "webspam" in the search results

Google has announced it will launch a new search algorithm which is expected to improve how to detect who, in order to achieve a better classification, perform actions that are against the Google guidelines. He warns that the changes will impact 3% of search queries.

As published by Google in their blog "Inside Search" and "Google Webmaster Central" :

"In the coming days, we will launch a major change in the algorithm led to webspam . The change will reduce the classification of the sites that we believe are violating Google's quality standards. This algorithm represents another step in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high-quality content. "

The "webspam" or search spam is trying to get higher ranks through things like:

Overload the page with keywords .
Link exchange schemes.
Cloaking, redirection "illegal" or "doorway" pages .
Duplicate content on purpose .
Indeed, the new update is not directed against excessive SEO but against webspam . The SEO is encouraged. In fact, Google encourages people to continue the best practices of SEO:

"Our advice for webmasters to focus on creating high quality sites that create a good user experience and to employ SEO methods" white "rather than engage in aggressive tactics webspam ... "

Finally, Google warns that the new update will affect about 3.1% of consultations in English, 3% in German, Chinese and Arabic. The percentage may be higher for languages that spam has increased, for example in Poland, where impact is expected in at least 5% of the consultations.

These are times of change. Advised war does not kill people.visit more information www.rkinfo.in/blog.html

You mention in your post that it gives a better user experience and almost everybody is in favor of that but at the same time it's a lot less frustrating for everybody that plays by Google's rules and try to create great content. http://hikinginmountain.com/

While my site which provided true value to its readers is nowhere to be found.

"above the fold" give me a break, stop looking at massive data with a 10,000 foot view and realize that everyone scrolls down if they need to, you shouldn't penalize people for being interactive with the site.

idn't you say you want all information at least 3 clicks from entry? Taking 2,000+ words of content on each page pushes it well past the fold and it would require well past 3 clicks to read all the information if it was the other way around.

You need to reconsider how actual, real people use websites as a whole, not your faltered data form analytics that's filled with bots spamming every internet page out there skewing results to appear that they must be "above the fold".

Google needs to the time it takes to crawl websites and update their search results. I have a website with 5000 products, it's URL structure changed. Google now indexes both the old and new URL's , typically right next to each other. Weeks go by , one sitemap with correct URL's has been submitted repeatedly and yet Google doesn't update it's index. COME ON GOOGLE!!
