Another step to reward high-quality sites

Google has said before that search engine optimization, or SEO, can be positive and constructive—and we're not the only ones. Effective search engine optimization can make a site more crawlable and make individual pages more accessible and easier to find. Search engine optimization includes things as simple as keyword research to ensure that the right words are on the page, not just industry jargon that normal people will never type.

“White hat” search engine optimizers often improve the usability of a site, help create great content, or make sites faster, which is good for both users and search engines. Good search engine optimization can also mean good marketing: thinking about creative ways to make a site more compelling, which can help with search engines as well as social media. The net result of making a great site is often greater awareness of that site on the web, which can translate into more people linking to or visiting a site.

The opposite of “white hat” SEO is something called “black hat webspam” (we say “webspam” to distinguish it from email spam). In the pursuit of higher rankings or traffic, a few sites use techniques that don’t benefit users, where the intent is to look for shortcuts or loopholes that would rank pages higher than they deserve to be ranked. We see all sorts of webspam techniques every day, from keyword stuffing to link schemes that attempt to propel sites higher in rankings.

The goal of many of our ranking changes is to help searchers find sites that provide a great user experience and fulfill their information needs. We also want the “good guys” making great sites for users, not just algorithms, to see their effort rewarded. To that end we’ve launched Panda changes that successfully returned higher-quality sites in search results. And earlier this year we launched a page layout algorithm that reduces rankings for sites that don’t make much content available “above the fold.”

In the next few days, we’re launching an important algorithm change targeted at webspam. The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines. We’ve always targeted webspam in our rankings, and this algorithm represents another improvement in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high quality content. While we can't divulge specific signals because we don't want to give people a way to game our search results and worsen the experience for users, our advice for webmasters is to focus on creating high quality sites that create a good user experience and employ white hat SEO methods instead of engaging in aggressive webspam tactics.

Here’s an example of a webspam tactic like keyword stuffing taken from a site that will be affected by this change:


Of course, most sites affected by this change aren’t so blatant. Here’s an example of a site with unusual linking patterns that is also affected by this change. Notice that if you try to read the text aloud you’ll discover that the outgoing links are completely unrelated to the actual content, and in fact the page text has been “spun” beyond recognition:


Sites affected by this change might not be easily recognizable as spamming without deep analysis or expertise, but the common thread is that these sites are doing much more than white hat SEO; we believe they are engaging in webspam tactics to manipulate search engine rankings.

The change will go live for all languages at the same time. For context, the initial Panda change affected about 12% of queries to a significant degree; this algorithm affects about 3.1% of queries in English to a degree that a regular user might notice. The change affects roughly 3% of queries in languages such as German, Chinese, and Arabic, but the impact is higher in more heavily-spammed languages. For example, 5% of Polish queries change to a degree that a regular user might notice.

We want people doing white hat search engine optimization (or even no search engine optimization at all) to be free to focus on creating amazing, compelling web sites. As always, we’ll keep our ears open for feedback on ways to iterate and improve our ranking algorithms toward that goal.

Hey guys, like a lot of you I have been hit very hard through these series of Panda updates. The latest optimization update wiped out all of my sites…I mean all of them. Like you, these sites were my bread and butter and were how I made a living to pay my bills too. I feel the pain you all are going through as well as the 10’s of thousands of business that have been wiped out overnight through the reckless of Google’s actions. Scores of mom and pop wiped out in a blink of the eye, whose much needed income was dependent upon for survival.

The reality is that there are a lot of hurting families and the latest update is on a mere reflection of another company that has uncaringly executed a series of actions without weighing the consequences of just how many families, moms and dads young children and legitimate businesses would be wiped out by a series of algorithms released by Google.

I know there are some who are faring well through this latest update. However, that cannot be compared to the number of people who woke up over the last six weeks or so only to find out they have lost 80 – 100 percent of their income. Guys, we can’t overlook the fact that this pain is REAL for many families across the U.S. and around the world.

As of today...I am dumping all shares of my Google stock!!!! Any company that makes decisions like this and ruins the lives of countless businesses and people!!!!

Google wanted to lessen the benefit for traditional SEO backlinking efforts, and for the most part, they did so. However, what they didn't realize is that most of the BEST sites use those same tactics to rank -- because for years it's worked and you've had to do that if you wanted to be on page one for just about anything commercial. So when they threw the switch on this update, those links got discounted, and tons of great sites disappeared from the results.

Leaving what? The guys who don't do any SEO, don't care about their sites, or aren't very professional in their approach to their sites. In other words, the low quality stuff that is out of date or out of touch has risen to the top of many queries. And, of course, the "big box" stuff that doesn't have to do much SEO because every time they sneeze they get another million links aimed at them via the media.

I wonder if Google is learning their lesson: almost all sites use SEO tactics Google doesn't like. If they turn off the effect of those tactics, they turn off the quality of their search results. "

So, are Googles stocks dropping? I thought I would take a look and see. Many are saying that they are dropping Google stock. So I did a search and of course did find much, because I used Google to search and get error messages when clicking on some links. But Google's personal stock page comes up, and it's BLANK!

Is anyone going to respond to us? Do you understand how this has affected us? This is ruining peoples lives....Genuine people who work hard to earn a living. We have all been encouraged throughout the years to provide anchor text for relevancy so why now are we penalized. How are you going to make your search relevant without it and why would you penalize us now after saying white hat SEO is ok? It is one thing to have a goal to provide the best search results possible and it's a whole other ball game to destroy the search results because you are out to get us. We aren't trying to "game" the system. We are doing what works to compete. You created this monster! Was it broken? It didn't seem broken before but now, it definitely is. This is what you do to fix it?????? In my niche, every single competitor that I "used" to rank with had similar backlink profiles or worse than mine. Your new algo didn't FIX anything. All you did was remove a handful of us and the worst offenders still rank. To me, that is what doesn't make sense. It should be a fair place to compete. You don't make it that way.

I'm certainly not a web spammer so to put myself and others in that basket is wrong and very harmful and I do have a really high quality website that does provide value to search and has been ripped from the SERPs as of 4/24/12 late in the evening. This really needs to be fixed!

This is devastating!

Ive got a site that typically pulls 100-150 visits a day. Today I had 5 visits.

To say that I feel sick, would be an understatement. :0(

Current Google update to tragetting webspam is good, but not great.

Dear Matt, i have a website that for some months rank #1 for keyword ****** *** classes . And in my site i give everything that people need to become *** and i even give users what they really looking for ... And i just got kick by this Panda update ???? My site isn't a webspam. I design the site by myself, i create contents that guiding users, and no such SPAMMING stuff in my site.

I think Google needs to fix the issues, even if the issues is minor problem.

@Chris: I searched for "insurance for kids" and I'm getting results for Florida and other US states.. I'm in India.. :)

I have only one thing to say.. if AskTheBuilder has been tanked because of 'lower quality' content, then we don't know what higher quality content is.

Google are not helping anyone with these search updates, it's just a way to try and get more people paying for adwords.

They are boosting only big websites.

Please don't waste your as well all the other webmaster time in this thread with comments like "quality content is now more important than ever" or "keep building quality links" and things like that. You guys keep saying the same things over and over again for the past however many years SEO has existed.. Remember that I am not some sort of a newbie who doesn't know what they are talking about.

I have been around for a while and I know what we were "supposed" to do and what was to be avoided.. But things are changing.. so let's concentrate on understand what the **** happened on the 24th and how we can move forward :D

Matt, you do realize that the payday loan website being linked to in your example is ranking #2 for "payday loan", right? I'm not sure that webmasters are going to believe what you guys are saying if the examples you use as "spammy" are ranking highly for very competitive terms. That just provides an incentive for people to keep using those tactics since they obviously still work. Just a thought.

Hope you guys can get this straightened out soon. I love using Google for search...but not in it's current state. ha!

This has really hurt my website big time! My website uses nothing but good quality articles that are never duplicated and my website completely dropped from Google rankings! Good thing I don't rely on my website for full time income but it still hurts because my website helps me pay extra bills! Get it together Google!!!

In the last few days our stats have dropped and our adsense account is showing zero clicks for 2 days now. We have great content. I'm all for making it more difficult for spammers to get good ranking but seriously what the heck happened to the search results? I searched for "michigan content marketing agencies" and not only did several companies that are not located in Michigan appear but so did a meat market.

You always say having quality content one of the factors to rank well in search engines.

But you always hurt those sites with compelling content. And some of the search results comes at the first page are either old, non-updated and trash. This update has lots of error. It pushed back quality sites.

I can give and example.

The new google algo update is full of crap... The only think that google want to do is to get more revenue from the advertiser, because the most related content from 'the new' google search result is the ads itself.

Something wrong with your brain guys if you think that 'no SEO at all' will rise a site ranking on google SERP.

You guys really need to fix it.

We have a website that caters to individuals that are in a critical stage health and about to have their gallbladder removed. Our natural products have literally helped thousands of people dissolve their gallstones naturally and thus avoid surgery, an operation that can cost anywhere between $6,000 to $26,000.

Until February 2012 we were ranking on the first 5 spots with Google. Now, none of the pages appear anywhere on the internet. Instead the search results turn out vague and general information on the subject of gallstones, but no alternative solutions offered beyond the typical "seek medical advice." You also find a lot sites that have Google Adsense but no solutions anywhere.

The recent updates to Google have affected millions of lives, not only in the financial sense, but it is preventing them from being able to find solutions to their problems in health or otherwise.

From my standpoint, it is very clear that this move by Google whether by design or by coincidence, ultimately will CENSOR THE INTERNET not by legal mandates, but via search results. It also seems to be a means to promote "politically correct" views, or those that profit BIG BUSINESS and undermine any alternatives.

Remember, people are looking for alternatives, not hashed out general talk about a subject. Any means to control what people have ultimate access to, is an offense to Freedom herself.

But there is a Great Law that is not written on paper nor stone and it says: that whatever you do unto others will some day return to you. I hope you policy-makers at Google realize that what you have done is actually hurting people in more ways than just financially. I hope that you wake up before your actions return back to you to pay you a visit.

we have lost 50% of the google traffic by this update.

We have high quality content, we are not doing any black hat seo. We have a long history, lot of likes and plus ones.

I understand that you google guys must do algo changes. But this dramatic change could ruin my business.

Moreover you don't tell the reason why our content is being deranked.

So, the only way is to buy a new html code and pay some $1.000 to seo guys.

When did this update start rolling out? By this blog post it sounds like Tuesday 4/24, yet I saw my traffic start to drop on 4/23... over the next day losing 90% of it.

Should I be looking at some other cause besides this update, given that the timing was off? I got no notices about violating guidelines, links, etc in GWT, and never have...

Now your ranking websites that don't even deserve or want to be there.

If you want to be known for superior results like you used to be tone down your algorithm or people might start tuning into BING for decent results.

Seriously, did Google do any testing of this update? They just made the biggest and most reliable search engine a complete spam fest.

I can't believe some of the results I'm seeing ranking on page 1 for all kinds of keywords. Sites with absolutely no content, haven't been updated in years, hosted on free servers, totally unrelated to the keyword search, horrible designs, etc.

This new algorithm is completely broken and needs to be fixed ASAP. My own rankings have dropped off completely after being ranked for years. Yet, I created a pretty useless blog LAST WEEK and its already no. 1 for the keyword I was targeting, beating out other sites that have been at no. 1 (and rightfully so) for years.

I don't know what Google's aim is here, but they have messed up big time. If users start noticing this trend, this could be great news for Yahoo and Bing.

Hi Matt,

I have a site that has grown organically over the years. Any SEO has been done to improve the quality of the site. It's a healthy example of a site the follow the guidelines.

Then, on February 6th 2012, the organic traffic dropped form a consistent 100+ visitors per day to almost nil, and that has been the situation since.

I can't work out why my site has been deprived of so much traffic. What happened on or around 6th Feb? I thought the latest update was in March of this year, or did it start earlier than that?

Can I expect traffic to pick up again? It's been two months now and no change.

What did I do wrong? Please tell me so that I can put it right.

This is the second day Im going home from work early because the phones are DEAD! This hasn't happend is years. I sent my staff home as there is nothing to do.I thought the point of any blog is so the webmaster can read comments and participate and share information. There is NO sign of google ANYWHERE on this blog? Man up google and come and face what you have done! Im HOPING that they read some of this and realized they made a terrible error and now have been working around the clock to right a terrible wrong..that is whats going on , right Google?

No, this is not fixed. Maybe our websites are considered "parked domain" because they had an algo error.


Like all the honest workers that put all to create good websites, I ASK EVERYBODY READING THIS PAGE TO PUT THEIR WEBSITE URL BELOW AND ASK MATT CUTT TO DECLASSIFY IT AS "PARKED DOMAIN". BECAUSE I think NOW SURE, IT IS AN ALGO ERROR. There are other competitors using extremely black hat techniques and they continue ranking higher at the same level. This is clearly not an update that will put out seo spammers, because as I told you, a lot of "bad" websites are at the top. We will get our ranking back. Sure of it.

I begin with my website. Add yours after to make Matt take into account this error. The better websites for specific niches are never listed on top of google.

Since Google's results are so bad these days, I had to use Bing to get some "relevant" search results and you know what I dicovered?

Bing has a really nice clean snf simple interface that is NOT filled with all the clutter and junk results that Google SERPs have been providing ever more of the last few years.

I'll definitely be using Bing a lot more in the future for my searches. I suggest those that are fed up with Google give Bing a try, I think you'll like it!

Horrible update.

My offline business is now nowhere to be found for "service + city" and we are the largest and most well known provider in the city.

To add to that, I'm a personal trainer with 13 years experience, a degree and multiple certifications.

I took countless hours of my time to create information on various exercises (even took the time to create original video demonstrations) and now THAT site is no longer in the SERPS?

It's EXACTLY what people who type in the keyword that I WAS previously ranked for would be looking for!

So much for optimizing the user experience. Out of habit I've typed in search queries into Google seeking information and the results that are coming back are terrible.

I had to use Yahoo and Bing today for the first time.

But we just wondering, when our site are down suddenly for most keywords.

I have several textual content, I created and many informative pages that have unique content. My website is one of the 3 bests websites in its field.

I can understand you want to encourage some other websites to avoid search monopolization. But how can it be possible to lost ALL in one night ?

My website has simply disappeared from Google. Before, Google brought to me approcimatively 200 UNIQUE VISITOR PER DAY...and this has triple without doing nothing because you old algorithm has estimated that based on many criteria, that people like my site. But for now, I only got 10 clicks from Google per day in average.

If you decide to divide by 2 my traffic because you estimate there is better websites, I can understand it. But here it is totally illogic. My website has disappeared.


I will stop annoy you sending messages, but if no one would have said it to you, your team will even not have noticed it.

I have worked hard for 6 years to build the niche ecommerce site http://coollunchbags.com We provide a unique assortement of lunch bags and give our customers excellent customer service. This was my retirement income until my orders stopped 3 days ago. My site was #5 behind the big boys like Amazon but dropped to #76 overnight. I ranked on the first page for 12 other keywords for the last 4 years and they all disappeared. We do absolutely no spamming and our internal links are dictated by the software at ProStores(an eBay company). Our links are all legitimate and we participate in no schemes.

Now on the first page are some crappy sites like

Links have become a problem for everyone. First to get them, now to get rid of rhem!! Of course they started it and played right into it. Well it looks like a boondoggle. As I said I agree with Mike, They should allow one link from a single domain. Then they should check the domain and classify it as a link farm or paid links etc and devalue them and go back to your site and classify it according to what it IS! 10 % of the equation should be links. Links should be about getting Traffic, not satisfying google's ranking logarithm.

I worked extremely hard, over the last 4 years to build a travel site in a region of Italy. I built content slowly and gradually over time and within one year my site finally made it to the first page of Google.

I did not engage in any keyword stuffing, irrelevant linking, excessive back linking - in fact, all of my back links have come naturally overtime from members of various travel forums and other blogs who have praised the content found on my site.

Two nights ago, this site fell to the 16th page, with no warning whatsoever. To my consternation, the first page is now filled with irrelevant and spammy real estate sites, which provide no value to anybody looking for a comprehensive tourist guide for the area.

Whatever this turns out to be, whether it is merely a blunder or just 'another (silly & failed) step to reward high-quality sites', one thing is for sure...

... to not answer after 450+ comments from infuriated members, is a sign of incredible cowardliness on your part.

i think this update was way too dramatic and unnecessary. there's now very few useful results on commercial terms. the nature of businesses is that they will continue to do SEO, or they wont rank, so accommodate that and go back to focusing on black hat stuff which has not been cracked at all (see Danny Sullivans post re: viagra hacking Wordpress blogs)

What Google says and what Google does are two different things. For example, I searched "hair and nail forum" and the very first result is a blank forum.

I keep hearing Google saying they want to reward "great content" and yet it progressively gets worse. My client site with the most complete and detailed content in his niche and purely organic backlinks (with the exception of a few press releases) just dropped 3 pages in rankings. I'd say this is typical Google lately.

The truth is that you want rankings to be unstable so we all pay for PPC.

There are several issues with this update.

1. Websites that have never built "un-natural" links but manually submitted articles and press releases that were optimized to their sites main keywords are being hurt, why is this?

2. Negative SEO is back and works as has been displayed by Dan Thies and those who targeted him with it as well. You've just changed the way the game is played in favor of NO control for good business people and entirely in favor of black hatters who will game the system far worse than they currently can.

3. What about ALL those people, who innocently hired SEO companies to help their websites are now penalized and gone from the rankings entirely.

What about the people who relied on their Website as a business. So the intent is to line Googles pockets with gold from Adwords is it? Shameful Google.

How many families who were just getting by from an internet business are now blown out and have no income suddenly!

Do you even fathom how many lives you're affecting for the worse with this change.

Think before you act and make these massive changes. I'm not saying spamming is ok. Obviously search has problems with it being manipulated BUT it's one thing to neutralize or negate spam links.

It's a WHOLE other thing to penalize the sites thus allowing for Negative SEO AND hurting websites from those innocent who rely on their websites established income.

So my question is this.

Why is Penalizing a site a BETTER solution than neutralizing links and making a majority of backlinks No-Follow.

Considering what I've said above and allowing for Negative SEO. This was something Google accepted as a problem back when it existed nearly 10 years ago!

Why allow it again over a much better & safer solution exists?

I've relied upon writing high quality content for years. I worked my way up manually and did what I could with white hat tactics along the way.

I focused on keywords and Onpage-seo. I find ALL my websites knocked down after this update to the point that I can no longer gain enough traffic to sustain my online business.

What did I do wrong? What do I do? Post ads on adwords and lose even more money? (Sorry been there, tried that!)

You've just made it so that no one can control their fate on the web and equally no online business that relies on traffic can either!

I believe you've only created more problems from this update and almost every person who was trying to run a business online has inevitably been hurt in some way... Wrong Google. ROLL BACK

The day before yesterday, two of my sites that were ranked # 2 and # 3 for a kw with 300 visitors daily in google.se dropped to page 5 and 6.

There the CATEGORY pages from WordPress showed up, NOT the actual pages containing the kw.

I had worked hard to provide relevant and unique content on both of the sites. The bounce-rate were below 50% and some interaction was going on.

The only thing I can think about that could have influenced on the drop is that there are some links from sites which I have outside Sweden.

In any case, it would be VERY education to find out which crimes against Google I have committed.

To stay on the positive note, I really think the change is a work in progress. I just can't see Google messing up this bad and leaving it.

I have been developing a site about a product for the last 3 years, basically ever since the product came out. I know everything about the product because I've used it for 3 years straight in every imaginable way. My site used to be near the top, and received amazing feedback from visitors because it was a plethora of knowledge in one easy to navigate spot. I had entirely unique content written by me. All images were custom, and the theme was custom. Everything about this site was done with lots of time, thought, and love.

Now I am on page 3-5, and 3 separate sites within the top10 are copies of mine, yet mine doesn't rank.

One of the sites not only stole 3 of my custom created images including my banner (And very poorly smeared out the watermark), but they actually stole one of my best articles and copy pasted it word for word. One other site in the top10 also stole my article, but didn't take my images.

My question is: "How come the original creator of the quality content with a multi-year trusted site loses rank. And then 100% copy paste copy cats who don't know anything about the niche or product are earning the desired ranks?"

Do you think the guy who only copy pasted my work will reply to the daily emails I used to get with thorough and honest answers? I highly doubt it.

I imagine the Googler will have a night and day worse experience now.

We create our sites from 1997, sites with original content. Always with good policies but yesterday all our sites has been dessapears from results. We have workers, designers, witters, creators, etc. Today a person that create a website copying our ORIGINAL content can be first in Google results (as new site) than our websites.

Please back to old version and solve to problem to do not penalize sites with good practices (juegamania.com, tu-pc.com, etc)

I have read every single one of the comments here and I fully understand everyone's concern.

I am sorry to hear of everyone's story and my story is pretty bad as well. My whole business which I worked on for 3 years on was wiped out. We used to make $8,000 per month in legitimate income, only to have it get wiped to zero in one day.

The one thing I realised is that it's not the end of the world. Thousands of people lose their jobs and businesses every year and they begin to pick themselves up and move on. This is your life. You may as well be happy about it for the short years we are here instead of living with anguish. True we are all upset, but we will get over it. We learn from these experiences, learn more about life and become a better person.

Google does not have our interests at heart. We have to live with it. That's life. They will be punished for it soon enough. There is a God watching over us and justice will always be served. Google most certainly is an unethical business and its about time this was known to the masses. They will wake up to what they're doing. Just as Yahoo, Myspace and Enron got complacent (and look where they are now), so too is Google following their tracks.

We just need to live with it. They will be punished.

Some of the sites original contents are to be found on newly created sites who just copycut the content from everywhere and some of the original pages are nowhere to be found.

Our site designed for user experience with expensive design and development. Our content original created for every update of site.
Now that content comes up on junk sites unprofessionally treated.. full of adds .. no user friendly layouts .. no work on site at all..

Can not be more frustrating

To say truth I really do not understand why globally articles are now much worse rated than discussion forums and agregators that are using real content from articles (i do not mean with word articles some spammy bullsht but real newspaper or professional or specialist blog work). Knowledge is in encyclopedias and in specialist work, not in some social chit-chat or in instruments that are stealing content from specialist (journalists, bloggers, hobby fans etc.) work like agregators.

I estimate Google has about 48 hours from now before a worldwide response begins in the form of Google Stocks prices dropping due to their search engine being less effective than the competition.

Resulting in a HUGE increase in Bing and Yahoo user-ship.

A Massive drop in Trust and Faith in Google (it's already happening!).

Not sure what's happened to Google but they're so focused on the details the can't see the bigger picture of what they're doing.

There needs to be a massive apology from Google for this. There needs to be some accountability from them.

This update has PROVEN one thing to EVERYONE who relied upon Google for their traffic and living.

You CANNOT rely on Google anymore, even if they fix this. Trust has been broken and I believe this may be the beginning of a major shift in perception.

I'm sure they'll say there was a mistake with this update, but how do we really know. If this is any indication of their intentions then one thing is clear.

Your online business in no way can rely upon Google for it's longevity.

We are working our asses of to bring great websites - in order to get rewarded with great traffic.

My website, with a time spend of 3 minutes and 8 pages averagely visited, and only pure unique content written by a professional, disappeared to the unknow craters of websearch, where they were first ranking page 1 top positions.

I am convinced that this update needs to be revised or else we will build campagnes for other search engines. We might revise our robots.txt. The internet is such a quick place, don't forget, you came fast, you can go fast.

I made a GRAVE mistake trusting google...I knew the made adjustments all the time, but I never dreamed they would kick my all the way from page 1 to page 6 in less than 24 hours with no explanation!. Lesson Learned. Based on the fact that we have posted 450 angry messages, and google cant be bothered to answer even 1 of them, I think the only message that google understands is money..if any of you have adwords, cancel them NOW! That WILL get their attention! When our phones stopped ringing it got OUR attention ..didnt it?

It has been the worst couple of days in my 7 years of running my websites. I have had a site have its Adsense removed for a slight fault, that I missed and corrected within hours of the dreaded email. Yes that was my fault, I missed a term and put an ad next to a safe fully moderated chat room. There is no way to contact Google to let them know I made a mistake and I fixed it and I am very sorry and please can I have my adsense account back for that site.

A couple of days later, I lose all my rankings for keywords that I have had in the top 10 for over 3 years, because of this algorithm change. My site traffic is down 62% and it hurts! It hurts even more to see other sites in my niche climb right above me because they have spent more money on paying for SEO. One of these site owners asked me for help months ago, so I gave them some help with the best of my knowledge that I could. Their site is new and now ranks above me for all keywords.

I have always done my best to follow Google terms and have paid out a small fortune to give my site users a good site to enjoy. It really annoys me when I see websites above mine that are basically built for high rankings and do not have anything to entertain the site user. Websites that the webmaster doesnt really care much about, but can spend a fortune on SEO to make it top.

I have a baby on the way and this is my only job and my family rely on it so much. Without earning online, there isn´t much else I can do to make a living. Thousands of other honest hard working people are probably in the same boat as me, worried like mad and upset, watching years of hard work go down the drain.

A change is a good thing in most cases, if researched properly. To be honest, I think, reading the comments, not a lot of research has gone into this algorithm change, no offence to Matt Cutts, but it seems like you are really playing god here with many people who rely on Google to earn an honest living.

If you can make a change that effects so many people for the worst, why do it? It is a little bit risky, dont you think?

Another thing that I hate, trying to contact Google. We are human, we can make mistakes, but most of us are not criminals. Take away our Adsense accounts and rankings, lose us our earnings and that is that, no way to contest it all. Many of us work very hard, long hours, days, months, years and it can all dissapear within hours without any way to contest our losses.

Anyway, I am hoping that soon, everything levels out and it all goes back to normal. I am glad I found this forum post because now I know I am not in this mess alone!

Here we go again, another BS algorithm change that hasn't helped anything except for the fact that more webmasters will get desperate enough to use Adwords....which has been apparent to all is Google's goal.
Sadly, we are stuck with a leading "search engine" that has become a monopoly and does whatever it chooses to the little guy who's just trying to make a buck.

When Google Panda update was released, I was confident enough that my blog will never get penalized as I don't have any copied content, my posts are written for my readers only and they are useful to them. I was happy too that some sites who copied my content will eventually go down. And yes, I didn't get hit by the Panda update.

But now, it's the worst. I didn't participate in link schemes or keyword stuffing. "Black Hat SEO"??? I believe in "long term", where my readers will help me by sharing and bookmarking the contents (if they found it useful, of course). I've read webmasters guide lines and have been following it! Then why me too?

It's a request, Please, fix your "algorithm".

Google is definitely contradicting itself. They want "the best content in the world" to get to us quickly... they think that content should just appear naturally. Well, people do SEO work to get their fantastic content to appear naturally. Who knows the perfect balance of SEO work to make quality content appear at the top spot? Not Google.

Now what we have is people who want their awesome content to get noticed, will have to pay for clicks. Google consumers/users who are unaware of algorithm changes will subconsciously notice that to get to good content you click in the lightly yellow shaded area - the CPC area.... organic results have clearly much less value than before. More clicks for Google.

Google's stock will continue to rise because they are not working to provide quality organic results anymore - they just want those who depend on Google's traffic to pay for clicks. And the cost of those clicks will rise rapidly as everybody who had good ranking sites before now compete with one another for a click.

I've made dozens of beautifully thought out, well researched real estate websites with loads of quality relevant and unique local information. Now homes.com zillow.com trulia.com and realtor.com are always dominating #1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 for just about any real estate term. And what kind of content to they offer? Syndicated very unoriginal crap that they all duplicate from the same source. Do they offer something unique? No. I offer something unique, higher quality websites. But now I have to pay for that traffic.

I wish we could all walk away from Google, but they've got such a Monopoly and control on the culture that you can't. When was the last time you heard somebody say "Bing it?" or "Do a Yahoo search?" You don't hear it. We're all screwed unless we bow to Google and pony up the cash for their clicks.

Congratulations Google, your stocks rose another 6 bucks today... the only entity that can stop you now is if the US Government comes in and rules you a Monopoly.

I'm still ranting. Here's my new question - what is the new guy in the www. suppose to do? Never rank? He's punished for doing SEO, he won't appear if he does do SEO. So he's suppose to find the perfect SEO balance... this is a no win.

Good useful sites are no more ranking whereas other sites without much relevant information is ranking. This i never expect. No wonder people will slowly shifted to other search engiens like Yahoo or Bing who offer more useful search results.

There is something you can do. Google's treasure is its users. Without users they are nothing. Start doing most or all your searches in Bing. They are giving credits for doing it and you can buy stuff with it.

Also write in their feedback section here and tell them how much you hate Google now and if they give you incentives as a webmaster you will move all your business and searches there. Tell them to get on the ball and Advertise heavily because now its the time for them to take action and get a big chunk of Googles ass:

Im seeing the same results here as well. Im seeing cheap crappy blogspot pages that have scraped my content ranking first page. While my site that hosts the ORIGINAL content has been banished back to page 80+.

What makes it almost impossible to understand is that all of my content is dated, and has the authors name against it (mine)

And yet it seems that a site that has obviously used some type of scraping software, outranks me?

It usually takes me a full day just to write one article, and publish it. Ive been doing that for months now on one of my newest sites.

Today Im sitting here thinking.."Why bother?" when it seems its all for nothing.

Google has always penalized the wrong person in the updates. You’re guilty until proven innocent. You are told to go file a DCMA report and get the copied material removed which they do charge to do so, without guarantees they can get removed. Basically, if site is not hosted or is not with a registrar in US they can't help much.

Others can do Neg SEO against your site with link spamming and you get penalized as Google again punishes the wrong person again, and it is your responsibility to get it fixed. I guess they assume every business is a big corp. and has tons of money to go investigate, or pay lawyers. Again, unfair business practice to the average website owner.

Only conclusion I can come to is that they seem to think the webmaster is always guilty, then they must be guilty of all the lawsuits and future lawsuits against them. I mean how can they claim they are innocent when they think everyone else is guilty?

I suggest Google enable a site owner to report those unwanted links: "these aren't links that we bought or in any way initiated therefore please do not let them hurt our rankings..." - something like this. I was informaed today that most sites hit by 'Penguin' were hyphenated urls.

This doesn't really make sense, but my site tanked and it also has a hyphenated url.

I would be interested to know if anyone else has noticed this?

Our site seems to be one of the only legitimate sites that have been hit by this update. Our company Chartwell Insurance was founded in 1965 and our website has been live since 2002 with no problems. Suddenly we notice a huge drop in our rankings across the board on the 24th/25th. The site has unique, hand written content on every page and we do not engage in link schemes or link exchange etc. Seems like a very infair update to those legitimate companies that are getting caught up in the crossfire.

I applaud your efforts to improve content on the Internet. On the other hand, I believe one of my PR 5 sites was removed from your index because someone I hired in good faith to write and distribute content produced garbage and distributed it widely.

The content of the page is the same as it's been for all of the time it's had a PR 5. I feel like
the site has been treated harshly. More important is the fact that a useful website will no longer be found.

In addition, I'm seeing lots of sites in my niche listed multiple times on the first page or two of results. Certainly that doesn't serve searchers well.

this Update doesn´t bring more quality sites on top at all. There are now some Blogs on the first 3 results, where the last post was made in 2009.

I think this can´t be the goal for a better quality of google search results.

Try a search for "paypal france" and check out the bottom half of the page 1 SERPs. We all know that "make money online" had a totally blank blog in 1st place until it was manually removed - and that's just a few examples.

If you have to manually adjust the results, your algorithm's not working is it?

Do you really think that all users want to see in their results are the big brands - Amazon, CNET, PC World etc? They already know about those sites! A truly good user experience would offer a variety of results, would allow users to read different perspectives, not just throw the same old junk that's always been there.

To be frank, the Adsense team do a much better job of identifying webspam than you do.

I was hit hard by this update. I always took pride in being white hat. Not buying links, submitting to directories for links (which was in webmaster tools for many years when i first started my site.), and trying to build a better quality site over time. I will try to recover from this by moving my very large site into a CMS like Joomla. It was very hard to manage a site with 40 or 50 thousand pages in html. I hope that my back link profile does not hurt me because i only submitted my site to web directories because at one time Google said it was a good idea to do so (in webmaster tools). It is unfortunate that my old site structure I created as a new web site designer 6 years ago hurt me after all of the updates I made it through without a problem. It hurts to see several years of hard work get called "web spam".

I hope that I can somehow get back into the good graces of Google as I really enjoy what I do. I also want to apologize if I in any way did anything that violated Google's quality guidelines. I am truly sorry and i still do not know exactly what I did wrong. Hope to see you guys around the web.

Eliminate competitor in few easy steps.
Create 2-3 pages linking to him and part of his content. Take article you do not like and smash it with 10-20 links from your 10-20 pages. Submit his whole site to 100-200 FFA.

Even if his site was clean before this, if he is not of the biggest authority, he will suffer :)

#1. You should at minimum RESPOND to them ASAP.

#2. You should TRY to address their concerns ASAP.

Google has done NEITHER!

It's not about making a mistake, we all do that, it's about how you handle that mistake.

Once you are made aware of the mistake, ignoring the mistake is the worst possible thing you can do.

I have been reading this thread with interest, as I have also noticed some pretty crazy looking serps...

Including the fact that the website that uses the crappy spun text that Matt has used (the pay day loan example), is in fact ranking towards the top of page 1 of Google.com for the term 'pay day loan'...

Normally I totally understand why Google do what they do, but this time I am somewhat confused, surely Google wouldn't want spammier results at the top of the SERPS, and really high quality ones to go down?

I honestly think that something may have gone wrong with this update, surely?

If so, it isn't surprising, with such huge data sets, it must be hard to run beta tests before full launch, and with so many variables in their algo, all interacting to differing degrees, man, I wouldn't like that job!

The thing is though, I am pretty sure that most of the online community would actually be MUCH more supportive (assuming this is the case of course, the error I mean), if Google actually came out and said something along the lines of:

'Hmmm, something does seem to have gone a little wrong this time - don't worry guys, we don't really want poor results, pages with no content, and youtube videos that don't exist anymore to rank in our SERPS! Leave this with us, we are working on it'...

A statement like that, far from making Google loose face, would make them look LESS like other big faceless corporations, more human, and like it actually cared about PEOPLE... which is what search is about really isn't it? People? Webmasters, and the folks using Google to find information or products.

Google/Matt, I am not sure if you are reading these comments, as there seems to be no response, but...

Whatever the reason for the weird results we are all seeing, whether you stand by the update, or think something went wrong and intend to fix it/roll it back, please JUST respond to all the folks that are having serious problems...

Communication can solve just about any argument.

I may get shouted at for saying this, but I still like Google as a company, and feel that these kind of problems are more about issues of scale and difficulty dealing with such large databases & complex algos than any 'conspiracy' to kill SEO. The problem is, without much communication from Google, people's fears start to grow, and then opinions can change...

Come on Matt! You have a stack of comments here, and Google always says we should engage with our communities... so give us even a quick reply, PLEASE? :D

I guess the lesson here folks is to diversify your traffic sources. Any of the big guys can and will as we've seen cause your business to dry up overnight. It should not be allowed, the monopolies commission should not continue to turn a blind eye to them.

Bing and others will see market share increase from this, no shadow of a doubt. Focus on them, and not forgetting Yahoo, then Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Google Plus (yes! even thought they are big G, its about diversification) and any other smaller networks more suited to your niche... More work? maybe initially, but ongoing you spread out your marketing efforts, content promotion and sharing... and there are hundreds of dirt cheap traffic sources out their that are 1/100th of Google adwords if you look hard enough... get in touch if you want to know any details

You shouldn't penalize the owners of the websites rankings. Remember most of the owners are hiring SEO companies to do the work for them. You should be penalizing the SEO companies who are violating the Google guidelines, not the websites them selves. And your Google! I'm sure you have a script or algo that can track what companies are breaking the rules. And then penalize them!

The results are now not relevant for the user. My industry MISSISSAUGA REAL ESTATE the first 3 results are the same cookie cutter site, same content, same listings just a different face. How is that giving users a "great experience" there just going to stop using GOOGLE and use BING OR YAHOO.

Your new updates has too many flaws in it, now I can hire guys from India and webspam my competitors site and bring them down.

Just because people use webspam linking doesn't mean their website isn't relevant or doesn't have good content. Google and SEO is not about quality content anymore or relativity!

A friend of mine is now ranking #2 for a very competitive keyphrase now, I asked him what he did and he said nothing! Not a penny spent in SEO. This is just plain WRONG!

And just like the other fellows comment. When you type in VIAGRA why are there 2 edu sites and a poetry site on 1st page? I checked myself and he's right. This is ludicrous!

Google went backwards in this update! Matt don't you know your ruining peoples lives! I'm telling my friends and clients to take all their shares our of Google until this mess gets fixed!

This update ruined me.. and I never used any black-hat technhique, I never copied anything from the web. All the writings in my site are mine and after spending countless hours of hard work now I watch losing my traffic every day. I used to have a steady income before this update, now I get nothing and so I decided to cease the existence of my site. I can't believe that I wasted 4+ years to maintain this site and now that I finally saw some results this freakin update killed my business.

Ipad 3: 8.62% 93 repeats (keyword stuffing) wow, amazing. How is this possible.

I have a website in a other branch, it was ranked with high quality content, my site offers features like no other website in the financial branch, and now it ranks nowhere after your great quality update. Bravo. I am really angry about that b....

I have send conclusion, but since over one week no reaction. This is a real Joke. Google forgot who makes Google big like it is today, really.

Three years ago while in law school, I built a website devoted to sharing information on family law in California. I know very little about SEO but I ranked high enough to draw potential clients from my efforts. I recently moved into an office relying on this traffic to begin my practice. After this update, my traffic via google dropped from 160 visitors per day to 5!

All the top rankings for California family law-related keywords are dominated by huge national websites which offer very shallow analysis and are basically useless to readers. Gone are the firm pages including my own which provided more detailed info specific to California law.

This update may prevent web spam but it also affects people like me who know enough about the Internet to write articles on my area of expertise. The only paid links I have are placed are on legitimate law-related sites like BBB, yellowpages, yahoo directory, other lawyers, etc.

It's a shame that my site which contains hundreds of hours of research and is as thorough as some treatises is hidden below loads of BS do-it-yourself hack job guides.

Here's my next move which I'm sure was anticipated by google: I have to pay them for ads! Isn't that what this update is about? Again, I'm no expert but it seems clear as day that that is what's going on

You ruined my life with your latest update. All of my site have been wiped out. I followed ALL of your guidelines. Nothing is left... all of my sites disappeared. My income dropped to ZERO. I have no idea how to pay my bills next month and how to feed my family. And all this because of your stockholders?
Google was once a great and cool company. And what was your slogan: DON't BE EVIL!? What a joke. I have no idea what to do now and what to tell my kids. Thanks a lot Google, your latest update has ruined my life. I did not do anything wrong. My sites provided useful and unique content... Why did you punish me and so many other wbematser who did not do anything wrong?

Worst update ever. Google you destroyed my business and my life. My website was all unique content, good quality and clear design, my only mistake was to be an entrepeneur, because now I only see big companies in SERPS.

Thanks for destroy my business, my 11 months baby doens`t has to pay for your crazy updates.

Google, like a slave said to a roman emperator "Glory is not eternal" don´t play like this with poor people.

May be someone should remind you of your comapny manifesto: 'Don't Be Evil' manifesto: "Don’t be evil. We believe strongly that in the long term, we will be better served — as shareholders and in all other ways — by a company that does good things for the world even if we forgo some short term gains." The sixth point of the 10-point corporate philosophy of Google says "You can make money without doing evil.

Nothing is left from this original Google philosophy.

I've been in SEO for 10 years and this is the worst update in Google's history. I've been tracking results in the "vision improvement" niche for many years.

The current search result for "repair vision" or "repair vision naturally" is totally broken. There are totally irrelevant sites on page 1.

NO 1: Yahoo Answers
Really? Not the most authoriative source. Mostly poor advice

No 2: An outdated article from 2007!

A ONE-PAGE no content, site with a single large image of a poorly put together AD for...wait for it... automobile repair. REALLY?
There's no content and worst of all, NOTHING related to "vision".

Totally unrelated site. It shows a technical document for some sort of software - vision configuration verifier

Poorly put together article. Site looks like its from the 90s

Another totally unrelated site. Another 90's looking site promoting window tinting and windshield crack repair.
(again, just because it has "vission" in its URL, doesn't make it relevant)

Pre-panda, our blog on "vision improvement" has original content that writes up on vision improvement techniques. It got tanked from page 1 to page 50.

Whats more, before the "penguin update" the serps were very relevant for "repair vision". There were blogs and well-written articles on repairing vision.

Now, it got replaced by cheesy looking sites promoting automobile repair, windshield repair and outdated information from old sites.

This is one of the MANY examples where the SERPS are broken. It simply reminds me of the days of using AltaVista.

Google, your relevancy totally tanked for many niches. If this is not proof, I don't know what is.

I know this has all been posted before, But I feel some may not have seen it, I have read some things on Forums and even on facebook of people that have filled a complaint! I did, Most of the info, does not need to be filled in, but you will need to write your complaint out. take the time, it may help!
