Five common SEO mistakes (and six good ideas!)

Monday, March 19, 2012 at 9:06 PM

Webmaster Level: Beginner to Intermediate

To help you avoid common mistakes webmasters face with regard to search engine optimization (SEO), I filmed a video outlining five common mistakes I’ve noticed in the SEO industry. Almost four years ago, we also gathered information from all of you (our readers) about your SEO recommendations and updated our related Help Center article given your feedback. Much of the same advice from 2008 still holds true today -- here’s to more years ahead building a great site!

If you’re short on time, here’s the gist:

Avoid these common mistakes
1. Having no value proposition: Try not to assume that a site should rank #1 without knowing why it’s helpful to searchers (and better than the competition :)

2. Segmented approach: Be wary of setting SEO-related goals without making sure they’re aligned with your company’s overall objectives and the goals of other departments. For example, in tandem with your work optimizing product pages (and the full user experience once they come to your site), also contribute your expertise to your Marketing team’s upcoming campaign. So if Marketing is launching new videos or a more interactive site, be sure that searchers can find their content, too.

3. Time-consuming workarounds: Avoid implementing a hack rather than researching new features or best practices that could simplify development (e.g., changing the timestamp on an updated URL so it’s crawled more quickly instead of easily submitting the URL through Fetch as Googlebot).

4. Caught in SEO trends: Consider spending less time obsessing about the latest “trick” to boost your rankings and instead focus on the fundamental tasks/efforts that will bring lasting visitors.

5. Slow iteration: Aim to be agile rather than promote an environment where the infrastructure and/or processes make improving your site, or even testing possible improvements, difficult.
Six fundamental SEO tips
1. Do something cool: Make sure your site stands out from the competition -- in a good way!

2. Include relevant words in your copy: Try to put yourself in the shoes of searchers. What would they query to find you? Your name/business name, location, products, etc., are important. It's also helpful to use the same terms in your site that your users might type (e.g., you might be a trained “flower designer” but most searchers might type [florist]), and to answer the questions they might have (e.g., store hours, product specs, reviews). It helps to know your customers.

3. Be smart about your tags and site architecture: Create unique title tags and meta descriptions; include Rich Snippets markup from schema.org where appropriate. Have intuitive navigation and good internal links.

4. Sign up for email forwarding in Webmaster Tools: Help us communicate with you, especially when we notice something awry with your site.

5. Attract buzz: Natural links, +1s, likes, follows... In every business there's something compelling, interesting, entertaining, or surprising that you can offer or share with your users. Provide a helpful service, tell fun stories, paint a vivid picture and users will share and reshare your content.

6. Stay fresh and relevant: Keep content up-to-date and consider options such as building a social media presence (if that’s where a potential audience exists) or creating an ideal mobile experience if your users are often on-the-go.
Good luck to everyone!

@Maile Ohye
I have read entire blog post and blog post which may help me to avoid common SEO mistakes.

I have little bit confusion with paginated content. I have added pagination to my all category pages. You can get idea by visiting this page.

There are too many page variation by number of products, price variation and sequence. It creates too many similar pages with same Title tag that's why I have added canonical to base URL for all dynamic generated pages.

So, What you think about it. I I will include pagination to those pages so Does it really matter to add canonical or not? I'm looking forward for your valuable inputs because, I found that, too many SEO guys have similar issue with this stuff. Thanks again for such an interesting video!

Thanks for the update. Focus on on-site optimization in-terms of user experience. This can be tracked in-terms of bounce-rate.

Not being an seo person, but trained in human communications, sales and marketing in the 'pre-google' sense, it seems to me that search is starting to come around to human nature, and those who can incorporate human nature into their sites may do better and better instead of being usurped purely by keyword tricks. Human nature is what it is, after all.

This is a short but an interesting post so far. I put more interest in first mistake that generally overlooked by the business owners once the page of their site ranked top on a competitive query (e.g. ecommerce development) but, a user can not find something special like offering low price, to return something, free shipping, free analysis or demo etc. These are the key that will definitely caught an user's eye towards your results among others.

My website is having problem in Google, can you please look?

Website: http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com

* Problem 1: Slowly losing (about 5% / month) Google traffic from January 2011.

* Problem 2: Google is not updating many sections of website.

Example: http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/file_extensions/12498-QDAT.html

Google search still slows old title which was changed 6 months ago.

* Problem 3: No ranking for many sections of website.

Example: http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/startup_applications/3817-01comm32exe.html

Search for 01comm32.exe in Google. 7 Results are not at all related to the file. 3 are websites just tricking user to buy software. The page in my website is over 6 years old. Older than most of the websites listed in search results. Still my page is not ranked.

Excellent video, Maile. I've already embedded this as a resource for anyone visiting my site.

One point that really hit home for me was the one about focusing more on creating value.

I've always known how important this is, but something about the way you said it crystallized it anew. You have me brainstorming ways to give more, show more, and make everything better.

BTW, your home looks very pleasantly decorated back there. :)

Does it's need some plugin, or something else? Is it should a website with more member or author?

Or it's happened naturally?

Thank you very much, I hope someone else could give me the light.

My task is more complex than the structure of SEO alone. My neche is unique and requires multi search, simultaneous dual comm linkaging for a hierarchy of automaton and security tech comm inralingo an id format of contextual intellect and filtering accossiated ideology and code hackers co-op and assigned scope of primary metacrawlers.

Basically you have to build websites for people and not for search engines..

But sometimes even google doesn't make all things as clear as they should :)

For example i was working hard to add rich snippets to my blog (Vectorash.ro and even if i followed the exact method, there were no results :(

SEO problem. There is a bug in google search, maybe it's individual, however it's one problem! You type "p90x" to google search, the third website "4000more.org" has nothing to do with p90x,but it's there almost more than one year. That can not be explained by SEO.It's FANTASTIC

What a bunch of BS! After yesterday's disastrous Algo update, I don't believe any of the propaganda about SEO that Google puts out anymore, especially from Matt Cutts and company.

I've done all of the things Google has said I need to do to create a "good visitor experience" and yet all of my websites lost their rankings for most keywords. I made a paltry $1.43 yesterday, which is my worst earnings day in years.

I know many thousands of very good quality websites suffered the same fate as mine yesterday.

So much for "do no evil" and all of that crap. Google is just pathetic in its attempts to control the internet.

olafshiel said...

I have a bit of a bone to pick with Google. I do SEO work and I lost some places in the rankings. I'm still trying to work out why. Anyway. On Google.ie the #2 & #3 for the search term "seo services" is one website, seocompany.ie. Fine. But is basically a three page site with a contact form on the bottom of the landing page. All the pages fail copyscape very badly Zero effort is put into the site. It's updated once a year and worst of all it's backlinks come three sources, two of which are clients (links in the footer) and 99% of the anchor text is "seo services". Almost no variation whatsoever. I have nothing personal against this site but I thought the whole idea of this update was to remove spam sites not promote them? I mean, WTF?

Thanks for the useful post.

It does not seem, however, that URLs submitted via Fetch as Googlebot in Webmaster Tools are indexed within 24 hours.

I changed my markup from data-volcabulary to schema and submitted 10 URLs via Fetch as Googlebot 4 days ago. But Structured Data tab still shows data-vocabulary, not schema.

my blog http://realjapanesebukkake.com has over 150 hand written posts, I was number #1 in Google for "Japanese Bukkake" almost 2 years, and after penguin I'm not even in the top 50 (while I still remain #1 on every other search engine). Now there are two blogs with less then a dozen half-assed posts that only get updated on a yearly basis in the top 3, followed buy a bunch of tubesites with violating copyright claims... where exactly are the honest webmasters being rewarded here? People who put no effort in their website and content thieves are having a field day, while honest webmaster like me can't even pay our rent anymore.

Spencer Littlewood said...

I agree with most of the points you make, i ignore the bots and write for human readers and write my best. it works both for conversions as well as for google finding me.
Having said this, i would like to add that since google and google chrome and the sneakily installed googleupdate.exe has arrived, my internet slowed to a third, and i found that google update.exe as using alg.exe to upload background consumer info to personally tailor search results. i proved this by using google search on varous pcs in same room under different google account logins. deactivating the tialoring search results (filtering) didnt change a thing. The results for the same search term by different people on different pcs gave radically different results.
This is adwords related and also affiliate site related, as well as to 'help' the customer in giving him what google thinks he is interested in most, INSTEAD of giving him a true global search result and rank, that is universally the same on a worldwide international scale.
I therefore propose the theory that google is now more like stumbleupon.com than a true search engine

Spencer Littlewood said...

and i agree with Justin who has realjapanesebukkake - i have suffered the same thing saince penguin. Spam and copy bogs get in first page and the original authors are not to be seen on google at all. Penguin is a big mistake and not evaluating accurately at all.

Willam Scot said...

Yes dear i agree with you and i always try to over look that type of mistake. for better traffic and better rankng position in search engine we should over look that. Thanks for this video.
