Reconsideration requests get more transparent

Thursday, September 15, 2011 at 4:30 AM

Webmaster level: All

If your site isn't appearing in Google search results, or it's performing more poorly than it once did (and you believe that it does not violate our Webmaster Guidelines), you can ask Google to reconsider your site. Over time, we’ve worked to improve the reconsideration process for webmasters. A couple of years ago, in addition to confirming that we had received the request, we started sending a second message to webmasters confirming that we had processed their request. This was a huge step for webmasters who were anxiously awaiting results. Since then, we’ve received feedback that webmasters wanted to know the outcome of their requests. Earlier this year, we started experimenting with sending more detailed reconsideration request responses and the feedback we’ve gotten has been very positive!

Now, if your site is affected by a manual spam action, we may let you know if we were able to revoke that manual action based on your reconsideration request. Or, we could tell you if your site is still in violation of our guidelines. This might be a discouraging thing to hear, but once you know that there is still a problem, it will help you diagnose the issue.

If your site is not actually affected by any manual action (this is the most common scenario), we may let you know that as well. Perhaps your site isn’t being ranked highly by our algorithms, in which case our systems will respond to improvements on the site as changes are made, without your needing to submit a reconsideration request. Or maybe your site has access issues that are preventing Googlebot from crawling and indexing it. For more help debugging ranking issues, read our article about why a site may not be showing up in Google search results.

We’ve made a lot of progress on making the entire reconsideration request process more transparent. We aren’t able to reply to individual requests with specific feedback, but now many webmasters will be able to find out if their site has been affected by a manual action and they’ll know the outcome of the reconsideration review. In an ideal world, Google could be completely transparent about how every part of our rankings work. However, we have to maintain a delicate balance: trying to give as much information to webmasters as we can without letting spammers probe how to do more harm to users. We're happy that Google has set the standard on tools, transparency, and communication with site owners, but we'll keep looking for ways to do even better.

The comments you read here belong only to the person who posted them. We do, however, reserve the right to remove off-topic comments.

What is the typical timeframe before a webmaster can expect a response?

I'd be most interested to know what happens if a site has been de-indexed by Google yet webmaster does NOT submit a reconsideration request for not being able to find a fault to admit to. Does Google team plan on putting out some kind of (perhaps automated) message to WMT regardless of the webmaster's action? In other words, does Google only contact webmasters in response to webmasters filing a reconsideration request or in response to an actual problem with the site?

Excellent, we are just going through this process as we believe this has happened to us. It is good to hear that more information will be made available during the process and after.

How do I know if my site is not ranking as high as it should be?

Webmaster Tools Center should let us know when a website is penalized or something...

I've helped over 7,000 sites in the forums, and it's obvious many 'sites' are thrown at the screen like pizza toppings, the 'webmasters' expecting G to make something tasty out of it. They're nearly always disappointed when the ingredients slide to the floor in a mess. Many 'webmasters' have around 50 sites, and can't remember what went where at the best of times. To them I would say Quality is better than Quantity, especially in these Pandamonious times.

Hostgator has blocked my site www.reserbar.com (13rd July) due to, as they say, the huge traffic I've had.
After I have moved the site, 12 hours later, I've lost all my traffic.
I don't know what Google thought by you penalized me.
After two weeks I refactor all the site introducing new content but nothing happened.
I started this site 5 years ago and now I am starting to shut it down if nothing changes in this days.
Thank you for your silence, Google and God starts to be so similar...

I'm fed up of playing cat and mouse with Google and the search results. You do everything right and Google still puts the big guys with the deep pockets at the top. I can't afford to buy links like they (so obviously) do. 10 results in the first page is like an atom in the ocean.
You obviously can't boycott Google, but you can let them do the work. Promote your site EVERY OTHER WAY POSSIBLE except via Google and eventually they will have to follow you. You search for 'Sony' and if Sony's site isn't in the top 3 results then the results are rubbish and people will search elsewhere.

This is very cool.
I also wished to have a +1 button close to a couple of comments to vote them too.

turns out what I do as long as it is not very useful, not many are willing to share techniques and hints for a fool like me.

It seems that indeed the biggest complaint of webmasters is that some are totally in the dark about the reasons why Google penalizes them or even if Google has penalized them, what exactly is the one thing that Google stumbled upon causing it to ban a site and how a webmaster can effectively redeem himself afterwards. I understand that Google does a lot of things automated and thousands of times a day, but still more clarity, even more than now announced would be welcome. After all taking someones livelihood by banning their site, i think deserves at least a well substantiated explanation.

Unfortunatelly, due to my site is in spanish, after my reconsideration request, I've received an official response that, by the moment, they are able to offer language support only for English. Nevertheless, I'm sure that Spanish language sites will be supported soon, as they conform an important part of the internet population. Regards. Gustavo

It would be nice if you would include this information in response to all requests and not just some of them. The response I received recently did not include any information of this nature.

I requested a reconsideration while NOT penalized ... I just changed the website design, little page structure and seo ... I want to cancel it but there is no option. Now my concern is if my website is crawled properly to the changes in the meantime and before reconsideration completion. Is reconsideration, for no reason, getting a website in halt or not? thnx

Hello,

Not certain why, but the disavowed links I upload seem to be ignored in the responses to my unsuccessful reconsideration requests.

Perhaps, you could let us know if those links are still be counted against us when you reply that "We've reviewed your site and we still see links to your site that violate our quality guidelines."

I am wondering if I should continue to use the tool, or are my efforts better spent effecting removal on unnatural links.

Thanks in advance!

Bonjour
Cordialement
