Webmaster level: AllThis week we launched an update to sitelinks to improve the organization and quality of our search results. Sitelinks are the two columns of links that appear under some search results and ads that help users easily navigate deeper into the site. Sitelinks haven’t changed fundamentally: they’re still generated and ranked algorithmically based on the link structure of your site, and they’ll only appear if useful for a particular query.
Here’s how we’ve improved sitelinks with today’s launch:
- Visibility. The links have been boosted to full-sized text, and augmented with a green URL and one line of text snippet, much like regular search results. This increases the prominence of both the individual sitelinks and the top site overall, making them easier to find.
- Flexibility. Until now, each site had a fixed list of sitelinks that would either all appear or not appear; there was no query-specific ranking of the links. With today’s launch, sitelink selection and ranking can change from query to query, allowing more optimized results. In addition, the maximum number of sitelinks that can appear for a site has been raised from eight to 12, and the number shown also varies by query.
- Clarity. Previously, pages from your site could either appear in the sitelinks, in the regular results, or both. Now we’re making the separation between the top domain and other domains a bit clearer. If sitelinks appear for the top result, then the rest of the results below them will be from other domains. One exception to this is if the top result for a query is a subpart of a domain. For instance, the query [the met exhibitions] has www.metmuseum.org/special/ as the top result, and its sitelinks are all from within the www.metmuseum.org/special section of the site. However, the rest of the results may be from other parts of the metmuseum.org domain, like store.metmuseum.org or blog.metmuseum.org/alexandermcqueen/about.
- Quality. These user-visible changes are accompanied by quality improvements behind the scenes. The core improvement is that we’ve combined the signals we use for sitelinks generation and ranking -- like the link structure of your site -- with our more traditional ranking system, creating a better, unified algorithm. From a ranking perspective, there’s really no separation between “regular” results and sitelinks anymore.
These changes are also reflected in Webmaster Tools, where you can manage the sitelinks that appear for your site. You can now suggest a demotion to a sitelink if it’s inappropriate or incorrect, and the algorithms will take these demotions into account when showing and ranking the links (although removal is not guaranteed). Since sitelinks can vary over time and by query, it no longer makes sense to select from a set list of links -- now, you can suggest a demotion of any URL for any parent page. Up to 100 demotions will be allowed per site. Finally, all current sitelink blocks in Webmaster Tools will automatically be converted to the demotions system. More information can be found in our Webmaster Tools Help Center.
It’s also worth mentioning a few things that haven’t changed. One-line sitelinks, where sitelinks can appear as a row of links on multiple results, and sitelinks on ads aren’t affected. Existing best practices for the link structure of your site are still relevant today, both for generating good quality sitelinks and to make it easier for your visitors. And, as always, you can raise any questions or comments in our Webmaster Help Forum.

Is the URL really that important in sitelinks? Especially since the majority of the space just repeats the domain from above.
It looks a bit ugly to have what is essentially a full-size result cramped into half the space. Why not just title and snippet?
Пизда-кабина. Компактные линки были на порядок удобней этого несусветного спамовидного говнища.
This is a great and quite an important improvement which I do appreciate. Basically it makes the navigation much more simple. Keep up the good work!
I like the "flexibility" improvement. Right now, my sitelinks look a little ugly too. But I'll let it play out and see how they end up.
looks too ugly. Old sitelinks are far better than these. Bring back old format please.
"These changes are also reflected in Webmaster Tools, where you can manage the sitelinks that appear for your site."
I see the sitelinks for my site (example) but I'm unable to mange them. And some of the sitelinks seem to be in need of a refresh it seems: the title text mentions content that's long since been deleted.
Also, you're linking directly to RSS feeds! What's that about? Or maybe I messed up somehow with feedburner. It's strange though, I've never seen Google link directly to an RSS feed. NEVER!
I'll look into it from my end but yeah, really strange.
very nice.
I think the new sitelinks are awful, they take up way too much space unnecessarily, and push other relevant (or perhaps MORE relevant) search results below the fold in my browser, and they don't really add that much value to the search results.
The old sitelinks were good because they were short, concise, and unobtrusive.
it is absolute better, showing site links with desc is really too much i think.
Its really good.. I am looking forward to these changes.
Why doesn't google just allow me to create my own site links?
Much better option in my opinion.
I really like much this new development in Google SERP. It is much better than the previous clickable textlink for "more information about this site".
Please maintain these new and improved sitelinks". Hopefully, it's also helps better conversion rate.
love it, great improvement
It will increase monopoly of 1st position site but negative for lower results which is not good I think.
busy/tough to read. also can't see much of the URL.
but i like the way it pushes down less relevant results.
When logging into GWT today I see that all of our sitelinks that were in there just yesterday are no longer displayed. It used to be that you displayed all the sitelinks for various queries that we had so that we could then demote specific ones. But now it is showing that we do not have any! Will that come back?
Thanks dear, this is great improvement
I've got to agree with Cold Hawaiian... these new sitelinks take up way too much room - pushing potentially more relevant search results farther down the page.
I liked the cleaner look of the old version. Let the user make the decision on what they feel is the appropriate result for their search without influencing them with this massive list!
as of now, there are discrepancies between the title shown in the new sitelinks and the actual URLs real title. Don't know where the displayed titles come from, they come from my site, but not from that url. Didn't happen with the old sitelinks.
Google is demonstrating more and more that it is about big business and brands and if you are not then you can whittle and die. Is there a need to show more than 4-6 additional links?
Are you kidding? This new look takes up the whole page. Another thing you did was add the black bar, which is absolutely terrible. Don't you know that less is more. If I worked for Google I would fire all of you that come up with these ridiculous displays.
Love it. The new sitelinks give a lot more information and make your website really stand out. Can't ask for too much more.. Thank you Google!!
"Finally, all current sitelink blocks in Webmaster Tools will automatically be converted to the demotions system."
This conversion didn't work for my site; my blocked sitelinks are now appearing.
Really nice addition/update the SERP.
Much easier to understand to the end user.
I feel this improvement is marvelous. Browsers would have more choice and a reason to visit the website. Each link is clearly mentioned with a small description.
What MANAGEMENT are you talking about??? I've demoted some links a week ago and they are still in the results!
I can't demote, I can't see which links are "next in line", I don't understand which links are gonna pop out in which case. This is ridiculous.
And yes, they are ugly too.
I echo some comments below regarding the fact you can 'demote' links but cannot 'promote them'
Also, the results take up too much space with the amount of sitelinks now showing, which pushes other results down the page and therefore the user has to scroll to see other SERPs results.
They are fine if you are looking for a company name, but I don't think they add that much. On the old system, the one line link usually explained quite well where the link was going. Now we have the one line link, the URL (why?) and a four or five word snippet, which again looks a little daft.
Does it add anything to Google... not really.
Now if this was going to happen to the first result in a regular search term, like "Best Hotel in New York" it would be fairly disasterous as it would take up half of the first page if all 12 links were showing.
Nice idea all the same, but I don't think the programmers asked a designer for their view. Ok there's not that much design behind a search engine, but this takes it to the bottom level.
This must sound terrible to you but pages of my site (http://careerquips.blogspot.com) are shown as site links of another blog with somewhat similar name (http://careerquips-diego.blogspot.com).
Just search for keyword "careerquips" in Google and you would see what I mean.
Do not know what is happening - but my blog is 4 year old with a lot of repute. Can someone from Google explain?
it's really good post.
I've requested a sitelink be removed 4 times over the past 6 months - I'm still waiting. Anyone at Google help me?
Thanks a lot
I think the old way was cleaner. Webmaster should let us choose the appearance (1 line, series of links, or full list) - and site links...or at least let us recommend. Rather annoying to keep demoting links when you can just recommend your core links.
Oh, how i wish the demote sitelinks within webmaster tools work. I have tried demoting tens of times in the past couple months, it does not seem to be working. We are stuck with google showing sitelinks that we believe make no real sense. And this is affecting our brand image too. Please Google make the sitelinks demotion functionality work. Thank you!!!!!
