Add +1 to help your site stand out

Wednesday, June 01, 2011 at 10:22 AM

Webmaster level: Intermediate

When we introduced the +1 button in March, Google search took a small step in an important direction. Search results can be more helpful, and more personal, when recommendations from the people you trust are there to guide your way.

The +1 button can help publishers, too. As potential visitors see recommendations from their friends and contacts beneath your Google search results, you could see more, and better qualified, traffic coming from Google.

Since we announced +1, we’ve gotten lots of requests from Google search users and webmasters alike for +1 buttons in more places than just search results. That’s why today we’re making the +1 button available to sites across the web. Sometimes you want to recommend a web page after you’ve visited it. After all, how do you know you want to suggest that great article on Spanish tapas if you haven’t read it yet?

We’ve partnered with a few sites where you’ll see +1 buttons over the coming days:

Partner LogosAddThisMashableHuffington PostRotten TomatoesNordstromO'ReillyReutersWashington PostBest BuyTechCrunchBloomberg

You'll also start to see +1 buttons on other Google properties such as Android Market, Blogger, Product Search and YouTube.

Adding +1 buttons to your pages is a great way to help your content stand out in Google search. By giving your visitors more chances to +1 your pages, your search results and search ads could show up with +1 annotations more often, helping users see when your pages are most likely to be useful.

To get started, visit the +1 button tool on Google Webmaster Central. You’ll be able to configure a small snippet of JavaScript and add it to the pages where you want +1 buttons to appear. You can pick from a few different button sizes and styles, so choose the +1 button that best matches your site’s layout.

In the common case, a press of the button +1’s the URL of the page it’s on. We recommend some easy ways to ensure this maps as often as possible to the pages appearing in Google search results.

If your site primarily caters to users outside of the US and Canada, you can install the +1 button code now; the +1 button is already supported in 44 languages. However, keep in mind that +1 annotations currently only appear for English search results on Google.com. We’re working on releasing +1 to searchers worldwide in the future.

If you have users who love your content (and we bet you do), encourage them to spread the word! Add the +1 button to help your site stand out with a personal recommendation right at the moment of decision, on Google search.

To stay current on updates to the +1 button large and small, please subscribe to the Google Publisher Buttons Announce Group. For advanced tips and tricks, check our Google Code site. Finally, if you have any questions about using the +1 button on your websites, feel free to drop by the Webmaster Help Forum.

how I can add this button to SMF forum ?

Looking forward to seeing this pan out...but I'm also worried about the abuse.

Why doesn't Google differentiate between "signed in" and "signed out" search results when discussing changes to SE Result changes?

Does this button also provide analytics on clicks?

You forgot to add a background color to the NDiIwb class so the counter doesn't look right on pages that uses a different background color than white.

The counter box looks terrible on sites with dark backgrounds, even on sites with non white backgrounds the counter number is not so redeable. The counter box should have its own background color.

The Button is really nice,
but the missing .NDiIwb background is destroying the design of my site -.-

I think by the looks, the button can be confused with buzz button.I hope a small icon with text come out soon.

mm it makes too many http requests. 9 for the 1st button & additional 5 requests for every extra button on the same page... Also an extra 302 redirection.

It seems an ok step but it can also be missuses. The big fish of internet industry may try to manipulate results by faking the +1 results.

Many new black hat seo techniques may be developed to exploit this feature. So please do take care of individual publishers like us who already have hard time appearing in the google search results.

Thanks. Now webmasters will have 3 buttons to embed.
+1, facebook like and twitter share. I'm sure +1 will become a strong "signal" for Google rankings in time to come.

We have just included +1 in our share buttons and it is looking nice. Check a sample on one of our website's page http://www.learnqtp.com/training/

Thank You!

I really like this new button. It will give visitors a strong indication how others think about our website. It will also give us a good signal how our visitor think about the our website.

I have implemented the button in a minute.

I have read this new feature of Google. the sound is great! However, I don't know how Count the +1. I just installed the button on my site at http://www.tradeforex.com. and then asked 4 of my friends to check it out. the result i get is +2. So, what's up here? I think it should be 4, right?

Steven Roose said...

When will it come to
Google Knol,
Google Sites,
Google Reader,
Google News???

Don't always only think about your most popular services, Google, you have more than those!

Hmmn...this is a good step. I hope Google doesn't later abandon it like Wave, GOOG-411, etc...

George said...

Is there a way to add this button and still get an valid HTML markup?

Steven Roose said...

I'm not sure, but can't you fix that to define a namespace "g" in your header? At least if you code in xhtml, I guess...

I installed the button to one of the sites. Several people clicked the button, but the counter still shows zero value.
I've just clicked the button and I only see 1 value. When I visit the page from any other browser not logged in to Google Accounts I see 0 value. When I log in - again I see my 1 click.
Whats wrong??
I installed the button completelly according to Google instruction (http://www.google.com/webmasters/+1/button/index.html).

Hi great work!

How could we be a partner with our social sharing service?

We offer spreadly.com in Germany and our members are asking if we implement the +1 function in our popup.

Thanks for reply and regards
Marco

I have the +1 button on my website, but when I search for my products locally, and my website shows up on the Google Places listing, it doesn't have the +1 button next to it like the other sites listed.

Arjit Srivastava said...

That's a brilliant feature. Need to test it, now.

when adding the +1 button you can specify the URL.

if i use www.domain.com or domain.com its really the same site, how do i specify that?

and question #2
i would assume when someone +1s me on my site, when i search my site i should see that someone on the search list, but i dont see that.

Hi,
I have installed a +1 icon on my blog. Now, my wish would be for it to be something like this http://j.mp/pFtZeF ,rather than the standard white/blue button! (as many objects on my site are black.)

many thx,
