Google Webmaster Central Blog - Official news on crawling and indexing sites for the Google index

+1 around the world

Monday, June 27, 2011 at 12:31 PM

Webmaster Level: all

A few months ago we released the +1 button on English search results on google.com. More recently, we’ve made the +1 button available to sites across the web, making it easy for the people who love your content to recommend it on Google search.

Today, +1’s will start appearing on Google search pages globally. We'll be starting off with sites like google.co.uk, google.de, google.jp and google.fr, then expanding quickly to most other Google search sites soon after.

We’ve partnered with a few more sites where you’ll see +1 buttons over the coming days.

If you’re a publisher based outside of the US, and you’ve been waiting to put +1 buttons on your site, now’s a good time to get started. Visit the +1 button tool on Google Webmaster Central where the +1 button is already available in 44 languages.

Adding the +1 button could help your site to stand out by putting personal recommendations right at the moment of decision, on Google search. So if you have users who are fans of your content, encourage them to add their voice with +1!

The comments you read here belong only to the person who posted them. We do, however, reserve the right to remove off-topic comments.

Yet it still doesn't work for Google Apps accounts, even the paying customers. Epic fail!

Webmaster tools is reporting many +1's for my site - but where are people seeing this - search results? I haven't added it to my site so I'm a little surprised! :-)

In the post, I like how you say, "if people "love" your link" haha Can't say "like" because facebook already branded that...

When can we expect this to work for Google Apps accounts? You promised months ago in a few weeks, well... empty promises.

Latency issues are a big problem with +1 on websites. At a minimum 1 sec. of page load time added. At a maximum? It's been over 10 secs. Servers have been very unreliable to the point where I want to remove it from my website altogether. Can't you do an async version?

It would be nice to at least have RSS so that I can share the +1s of mine. All of my recommendations sit in the hollow world of my Google profile.

I'm looking forward seeing the next steps you'll get in expanding the usage of this project.
Until now +1 seems like a very nice social feature but only time will tell how successful and useful this is.

I can't +1 the comments here? Another EPIC FAIL!

@Hendra

Google +1 is designed to be used for individual web pages not individual sections on a web page.

Does it use the Salmon protocol by your employee John Panzer? With Activity Streams it seems to be the perfect solution to /like/ things in the open Web.

Great news! Looking forward to have +1 in Ireland. What about people not logged to Google? Will they be able to see "+1"s?

Giuseppe said...

Great, in Italy it's coming soon!

@Richard, where are you seeing your site's +1's in webmaster tools? I don't see anything in my account.

And yes, the +1's come from Google search results as well as on sites.

The +1 makes no sense as it only rewards those sites with lots of returning visitors.
The natural navigation of a new visitor is to first do the search query at google, find the links that may solve his problem, click on the link, access the site and see if the solution is there. If the solution is in that site, there will be a conversion and the broser will be closed...the customer won't get back to google to perform the exact same search and reward the site with a +1.
So in this case we'll never know if it's +1 is a good way of seo ranking.

We are running +1 in our Wordpress Blog, but there is a huge Bug in your Code. :)

If I use it on single.php and the excerpt is displayed on the blog's homepage, it counts the +1 for the homepage/root not for the single post. Because it's taking the URL of the current page. That's a fail for the usage of WordPress. Have a look: www.sixtblog.de

has +1 on google search been turned off now? I've just searched for a site I'd forgotten the url of and the +1 symbol isn't appearing at the side of my search results (just the magnifying glass one). I'm signed in to my to google.co.uk account so it should be there.

I've read a lot of comments about users not knowing what +1 means. Apologies if anyone has suggested this before - but what about having the G icon and 'rate' next to it?
