Rich snippets go international

Monday, April 26, 2010 at 4:51 PM

Webmaster Level: All

As part of our efforts to make search results more useful to our users around the world, we’re announcing the international availability of rich snippets. If you’ve been following our blog posts, you already know that rich snippets let users see additional facts and data from your site in search results.

For example, we recently launched rich snippets for recipes which, for certain sites, lets users see quick recipe facts as part of the snippet and makes it easier to determine if the page has what they are looking for:

We’ve had a lot of questions on our blogs and forums about international support for rich snippets - and we know that many of you have already started marking up your content - so today’s announcement is very exciting for us.

In addition to adding support for rich snippets in any language, we have published documentation on how to mark up your sites for rich snippets in the following languages: simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese, Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish. (You can change the Help language by scrolling to the bottom of the help page and selecting the language you want from the drop-down menu.)

We encourage you to read the documentation to take advantage of the different types of rich snippets currently supported: people profiles, reviews, videos, events and recipes. You can also use our testing tool (in English only, but useful to test markup in any language) and start validating your markup to make sure results show as you would expect.

Finally and as you’ve probably heard by now (several times), we’re taking a gradual approach to surface rich snippets. This means that marking up your site doesn’t guarantee that we’ll show rich snippets for your pages. We’re doing this to ensure a good experience for our users; but rest assured we’re working hard to expand coverage and include more web pages.

The comments you read here belong only to the person who posted them. We do, however, reserve the right to remove off-topic comments.

Hello!

Isn't it critical to use classes and huge nestings for rich snippets? If you ask me there is no other way at the moment but it's very contrary to the suggested efforts in website speed. So is there a any negative influence having some rich snippets and a slightly slower website?

Yours
Guido

Does this mean that previously rich snippets did not work on international sites, or just that documentation in more languages is added?

I'm doing a course on completion of "web usability" for my college, and would have the greatest honor if one of you even if not fully integrated into the creation of the website, but is good at it, could answer a questionnaire. So I put in my project and as I said would be a great honor to have the touch of someone who works in one of the biggest powers on the Internet. Thanks

We use the Facebook Share video markup format with no problems within the FB platform but I can't see the results with the Rich Snippets Google testing tool.

I've tried also with Youtube URLs such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xxEZEcgux4 but I get the same message: Insufficient data to generate the preview.

Any idea? Thanks!

What about the meta description then? Will this effect the indexing part? Is having rich snippets even better than the meta description?

Useful to see this going international. It does seem a bit random what Google decide to display though. We set up www.slowdating.com/events.aspx to fit this rich snippets for events some time back. It works with the Google rich snippets testing tools - try it. However, the snippets for the page doesn't display when you search via google.com. Yet!? :) Is there a human approval process? So be careful - you may spend a fair bit of time writing up the code which will never be used :(

We are using rich snippets on our site http://www.nakupka.cz for more then month, but they have still not appeared in search engine. Testing tool shows them right, e.g. look at http://www.nakupka.cz/vyrobek/mycka-nadobi-siemens-sn25m230eu/
search engine tool: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets?url=http://www.nakupka.cz/vyrobek/mycka-nadobi-siemens-sn25m230eu/&view=
google search: http://www.google.cz/search?hl=cs&source=hp&q=My%C4%8Dka+n%C3%A1dob%C3%AD+Siemens+SN25M230EU&btnG=Vyhledat+Googlem&lr=&aq=f&oq= (first result)

We are one of biggest czech eshops, with PR 6 (noone got bigger here), so i think there is no reason for not being between selected ones

Huge sites like Meetup are very event-based...and, well, ours is too :)

Is Event support coming soon? According to the docs, they aren't supported yet.

I see that the Rich Snippets Testing Tool recognizes the data I added, but regrettably no rich snippets for me.

Would adding Organization/Geo information help at all?

Thanks,
Kevin
