Verifying a Blogger blog in Webmaster Tools

Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 2:48 PM

Webmaster Level: All

You may have seen our recent announcement of changes to the verification system in Webmaster Tools. One side effect of this change is that blogs hosted on Blogger (that haven't yet been verified) will have to use the meta tag verification method rather than the "one-click" integration from the Blogger dashboard. The "Webmaster Tools" auto-verification link from the Blogger dashboard is no longer working and will soon be removed. We're working to reinstate an automated verification approach for Blogger hosted blogs in the future, but for the time being we wanted you to be aware of the steps required to verify your Blogger blog in Webmaster Tools.

Step-By-Step Instructions:

In Webmaster Tools
1. Click the "Add a site" button on the Webmaster Tools Home page
2. Enter your blog's URL (for example, googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com) and click the "Continue" button to go to the Manage verification page
3. Select the "Meta tag" verification method and copy the meta tag provided

In Blogger
4. Go to your blog and sign in
5. From the Blogger dashboard click the "Layout" link for the blog you're verifying
6. Click the "Edit HTML" link under the "Layout" tab which will allow you to edit the HTML for your blog's template
7. Paste the meta tag (copied in step 3) immediately after the <head> element within the template HTML and click the "SAVE TEMPLATE" button

In Webmaster Tools
8. On the Manage Verification page, confirm that "Meta tag" is selected as the verification method and click the "Verify" button

Your blog should now be verified. You're ready to start using Webmaster Tools!

I am trying to add the meta tag for verification into my blog template, but it only works for the classic templates.
If I change the template and add again the meta tag, it is not recognized
What is the problem?

Also, I read in some sites that the verification can be done by accessing the Webmaster Tools on Tools & Resources of Blogger dashboard. However I have not this option (webmaster tools) inside the Tools & Resources tab

I have modified the blogger template, and it has been working fine. As far as I can understand, if you can add the meta tag in the head section by editing the HTML source, your blog will be verified, whichever blogging platform you're using.

A helpful post, but webmaster allowed verification of blogger blogs way back.

Verification was easy thanks!

However, every attempt I make at making a site map does not work and has fail status.

I have tried every suggested method via sites and forums. Work at first then fail message.

The thingy...
http://XXXXX.blogspot.com/atom.xml
http://xxxx.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/full

Without ability to upload xml... all blogger sitemaps suggestions fail after a few hours?

Any other methods suggested?

Or is it even relevant to use a sitemap when publishing via blogger/feedburner?

Thanks,

Chris

This would be useful if it actually worked. On two of my sites, Webmaster Tools reverts to the uploaded file every time I try to switch it. It doesn't retain the meta tag verification.

@Chris S, can you post the URL of the site where this is happening? Feel free to use a URL shortener if you prefer. Thanks!

@EHS Director, you don't have to submit Sitemap files for Blogger sites -- it's all handled for you automatically :-)

@RKA WordPress.com has information on verification at http://en.support.wordpress.com/webmaster-tools/

1. I tried a meta tag, but when I insert the meta tag below head and click save the template, the code disappeared and when I check again, the code has disappeared
2. I tried to download the html, but I can upload it to blogspot because these features are not provided.
3. when I click the link webmaster tools at the bottom of my blogger account, webmaster page appears and still shows I have not verified

how do I verify?
