Help us make the web better: An update on Rich Snippets

Monday, October 26, 2009 at 2:00 PM

Webmaster Level: All

In May this year we announced Rich Snippets which makes it possible to show structured data from your pages on Google's search results.

We're convinced that structured data makes the web better, and we've worked hard to expand Rich Snippets to more search results and collect your feedback along the way. If you have review or people/social networking content on your site, it's easier than ever to mark up your content using microformats or RDFa so that Google can better understand it to generate useful Rich Snippets. Here are a few helpful improvements on our end to enable you to mark up your content:

Testing tool. See what Google is able to extract, and preview how microformats or RDFa marked-up pages would look on Google search results. Test your URLs on the Rich Snippets Testing Tool.

Google Custom Search users can also use the Rich Snippets Testing Tool to test markup usable in their Custom Search engine.

Better documentation. We've extended our documentation to include a new section containing Tips & Tricks and Frequently Asked Questions. Here we have responded to common points of confusion and provided instructions on how to maximize the chances of getting Rich Snippets for your site.

Extended RDFa support. In addition to the Person RDFa format, we have added support for the corresponding fields from the FOAF and vCard vocabularies for all those of you who asked for it.

Videos. If you have videos on your page, you can now mark up your content to help Google find those videos.

As before, marking up your content does not guarantee that Rich Snippets will be shown for your site. We will continue to expand this feature gradually to ensure a great user experience whenever Rich Snippets are shown in search results.

The comments you read here belong only to the person who posted them. We do, however, reserve the right to remove off-topic comments.

Is it for blogger also?

Whilst I applaud the short term idea behind your efforts (not the long term one of using our content so that folks never again have to click through to our sites), what would be nice is if Google actually took the effort to start showing these structured results more often.

I just tried a site I'm working on: http://www.arsercelik.com/indextr.php

The tool returned with this message:
The following errors were found during preview generation:
* Insufficient data to generate the preview.

However the tool showed all the necessary microformat fields from the page in the "Extracted Rich Snippet data from the page" section.

How do I know what is wrong with my microformat?

Good job google in understanding webmaster issue... now big dynamic site dont need to worry about crawling issue in google. This is the best update google has done.
I will experiment Rich Snippets Testing Tool for my site.

Any idea when this feature will be rolled out to International websites? We support microformats for few years and that'd be great to see them used.

Your checker doesn't completely follow the Microformats specifications for 'tel'.

See: http://microformats.org/wiki/hcard#type_with_unspecified_value

If an element with the class name 'tel' is created with another element called 'type' inside of it, but the phone number isn't contained within an 'value' element, it should ignore the 'type' and only show what is contained within the 'tel' without any hCard elements around it...

Or in short.... your tester shows "Toll Free 555.555.55555" as the 'tel' 'value' because it doesn't ignore the 'type' (in the case above being "Toll Free")

Aside from that, good news! :)

Just tried the Testing Tool. But it keeps on telling me there's insufficient data to generate a preview. Even with the samples from http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=146750

Isn't that weird? Anyone has ideas?

RDFa for me on my videos, it's ok.
This one for example give me a rich snippet: http://www.octeam.fr/video/watch/94/amd-hd-5870--nvidia-8800-gt-physx.html

The only issue I got is that the "count" parameter should only grab the numeric value, because I got "votes reviews" instead of just "reviews" provided by the rich snippet.

So google just need some tunings on the parameters functions, but this is a great job !

Thanks everyone for all of the feedback and suggestions in response to our Rich Snippets update. We'll continue to make improvements to the parser and documentation based on common points of difficulty and announce changes as we make them.

The most common challenge we've seen is understanding the various reasons why the message "Insufficient data to generate the preview" shows up in the testing tool. We have added an FAQ describing the reasons this error can occur on the Rich Snippets Tips and Tricks page here:

http://knol.google.com/k/google-rich-snippets#Frequently_Asked_Questions

Regarding international support, we added support for Rich Snippets in Japanese last week. It is now available for Google users in English and Japanese. We are looking forward to adding support for more languages in upcoming months.

My client has a product site for infants and babies. People that visit the site rate and review the products. The third party company that they have license the review software from said that "google doesn't use that for product or retail sites. Is that correct or not. Thank you.

Following this post, I created a website on Google App Engine that allows peoples with a google account to create and publish their FOAF profile !

Cheers for the FOAF support!

It is however a little unclear what properties a FOAF based RDFa page would need to implement to show a "Rich Snippet".

I can't get it to display in the Rich Snippets Testing Tool with the typical "Insufficient data to generate the preview." problem even though I have a xhtml + rdfa valid page. Any chance on some docs?

On what basis Google select webmaster profile photo to show in Google Search Results?
I have read the FAQs and checked for similar issues: YES
My site's URL (web address) is:http://www.way2onlinejobs.com
Description (including timeline of any changes made):
I totally disappointed with Google for not showing my Google Plus Profile Photo on Google Search Results alongwith my website.
I have more than 63 posts in my website and more than 50 posts in my blog. Most of them in top 10 of Google Search Results
Still how many days I have to wait I don't know. I have also submitted the form of request to Google Rich Snippets.
Still my profile photo not showing in Google Search Results

Important Note: Google gives lot of importance to US Citizens than other countries in this Google Plus Rich Snippets.
For example you this profile of John Paul Titlow
https://plus.google.com/105887798538435693558#105887798538435693558/posts

Note : Not even one post in his Google Plus Profile Page, About page also incomplete one, No Google +1 Posts and Google Buzz activities. On what basis Google display his profile in Google Search Results.

I am totally, totally disappointed with Google partiality attitude towards other country people. I am huge supporter of Google Products. But Google cannot treat me like this. It is very very sad in my life.

Most of the Google Plus Profiles listed in Google Search Results is empty one.
1.No Post
2.Incomplete Profile
3.No Google Plus one activities
4.No Photos in their profile
5.No Google Buzz activities

First of all these people in Google Plus Profile don't respect Google and Google Products because of that only incomplete profiles. But there are true lovers and true supporters for Google Products like me. But Google not giving respect to real supporters. Google always giving respect to who is not Google supporter. This is very sad. Google should change its attitude. And Google should show more and more profile photos on Google Search Results hereafter.
Thank you
yours faithfully
Perambur Kumar
Note : I have more followers in Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Stumbleupon than other Google Plus Profile Webamsters displayed in Google Search Results
