Google Webmaster Central Blog - Official news on crawling and indexing sites for the Google index

Help test some next-generation infrastructure

Monday, August 10, 2009 at 4:14 PM

Webmaster Level: All

To build a great web search engine, you need to:
  1. Crawl a large chunk of the web.
  2. Index the resulting pages and compute how reputable those pages are.
  3. Rank and return the most relevant pages for users' queries as quickly as possible.
For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google's web search. It's the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions. The new infrastructure sits "under the hood" of Google's search engine, which means that most users won't notice a difference in search results. But web developers and power searchers might notice a few differences, so we're opening up a web developer preview to collect feedback.

Some parts of this system aren't completely finished yet, so we'd welcome feedback on any issues you see. We invite you to visit the web developer preview of Google's new infrastructure at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ and try searches there.

Right now, we only want feedback on the differences between Google's current search results and our new system. We're also interested in higher-level feedback ("These types of sites seem to rank better or worse in the new system") in addition to "This specific site should or shouldn't rank for this query." Engineers will be reading the feedback, but we won't have the cycles to send replies.

Here's how to give us feedback: Do a search at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ and look on the search results page for a link at the bottom of the page that says "Dissatisfied? Help us improve." Click on that link, type your feedback in the text box and then include the word caffeine somewhere in the text box. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Update on August 11, 2009: [ If you have language or country specific feedback on our new system's search results, we're happy to hear from you. It's a little more difficult to obtain these results from the sandbox URL, though, because you'll need manually alter the query parameters.

You can change these two values appropriately:
hl = language
gl = country code

Examples:
German language in Germany: &hl=de&gl=de
http://www2.sandbox.google.com/search?hl=de&gl=de&q=alle+meine+entchen

Spanish language in Mexico: &hl=es&gl=mx
http://www2.sandbox.google.com/search?hl=es&gl=mx&q=de+colores

And please don't forget to add the word "caffeine" in the feedback text box. :) ]

Can you expose a bit more about what's happening here?

Are these crawl updates? Rank updates?

I really like the way the "+ Show more results from www.danfinney.com" links work. I know they came before caffeine, just thought I would mention it.

I am only noticing subtle differences in the results so far. Some sites returning two results instead of one, one link leapfrogging another, etc. The biggest difference seems to be that there are more pages in the pool of results. For example there are a million extra pages in various searches:

1 - 10 of about 1,520,000 on Google live

1 - 10 of about 2,550,000 on caffeine.

My search with the same expression between the new engine and the today engine gives 7170 vs 803 results. Results are not the same in three first pages but more relevant. GREAT JOB !

I've noticed more Twitter pages in the results with this version of Google. Quite like having that - makes it easier to find people and companies.

@Andre

That normally means you are posting from a computer that runs through a big firewall. Are you at work? It used to say that when i searched at my job, all 50 million computers at my job, yes not an lie, go through the same IP so it looked like SPAM. You may have to contact Google to let them know you're a safe IP.

Are keywords somehow weighted more heavily in this structure?

For me there are two kinds of search results: those of pages which are useful, and those of sites which are useful. This system seems to neglect sites which are useful in favour of perhaps keywords or perhaps domain name association (while not domain names, which seem relevant but not much). This is useful if I'm after a specific morsel of information say an acute need, but detrimental to me if I'm after finding a resource say a site on a niche topic where posts might not be SEO keyword emphasised (which imho is a massive fraud by many sites in search results).

BTW, why do I have to use my Google account to comment here? Why is not the more web-standard/normal name, email address and optional webpage link not used?

Rosehr said...

Yup! I`ve tried some German results - since . It is awaited: more relevance(Matts Words" - Less Results Name -address- not more - Less catalogs. I hope U can improve this. Even so Google has improved. But since I look out per day several times. Many things things are motivating -Such is- Options which I like a lot forward. But So far not a feature in Germany. But I think we all saw a firework of ideas. But we see what in the end will become reality! Good hand for "U" the best to choose!!!!!!Sorry for my clumsy ENGLISH

Rodney Riley said...

As this version is clearly an evolution of the .com index it is difficult to gage the impact on those of us who predominately use localised Google (in my case .co.uk).

From what I can judge it seems to be cleaner with fewer spammy results and a great bias towards “high value” domains. I’d question if this is the right way forward in every instance for example searching for gravel brings up a variety of results (wiki, answers.com and an American senator all rank highly) but the is only one gravel supplier. I think on aggregate this result is lower value based in the suspicion most people will be looking for the product.

I’m looking forward to seeing how this evolves. caffeine

It would also be greatly useful if the hits could be further refined or categorised into groups. This is so that one can see all information related to a single person or something under one tab, without having to scroll through several pages.

At the moment, one has to provide more keywords. But I am certain that it would be trivial for the offline indexing process to automatically generate such keywords from the pages and group the pages accordingly.

Thanks for this opportunity to try out the new version of the search engine and provide feedback. My initial impression is good. I’ve set the sandbox URL as homepage and will continue to test extensively.

I appreciate that you may be unable to answer individual queries. I know that many of us will be wondering whether underscores have equal status as dashes in the new search engine.

I believe you have previously suggested that this was in the pipeline. There is a compelling case for it. Dashes are surely a legitimate delimiter for words in a URL.

I raised this point recently on my blog. I’ll offer the URL because the article and comments cite various relevant sources including current Google documentation:-

I am seeing a lot more 'geographic-based spam' results when location-specific terms are included in the intial search terms. Like so:

Search "Mytown Mystate computer virus", & it brings up sites with somewhat relevant content WRT keywords/phrases, but generic and mostly unhelpful content that basically serves only as a springboard to an artificially high ranking, one with no real relation to the actual location specified in the search.

That is, the someone in Mytown gets a very generic article about viruses, but the highest ranked results are basically spammy sites for paid advertisers, not a) in-depth content WRT fixing their problem or to learn from, or b) links to local companies which fix/repair/consult system problems. I imagine these high-rank sites also contain a fair bit of advertising which I cannot see (thx Adblock!).

The new engine has inferior results to the main engine for one example I tested.

http://www2.sandbox.google.com/#q=%22taxation%20is%20theft%22&hl=en&num=100&output=search&tbs=qdr:d&tbo=1&fp=RJE6Q6d2Dpw

You have 3 results, all spam.

In the main engine:

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22taxation%20is%20theft%22&hl=en&client=firefox-a&channel=s&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=Jos&sa=G&num=100&output=search&tbs=qdr:d&tbo=1

You have better results.

You've got to filter out those spam sites like
dayanaramilesop.yodmgdfj.com/salmon_fishing_areas_in_whatcom.html

What those scammers are doing is presenting one page to Google's search crawler, but another page to everyone else. **FIX THIS DEFECT!!**

I noticed that the titles of the posts and sites are considered more than the content.
Some sites simply disappeared from all relevant searches of Caffeine and the difference of time and number of sites in search worsened (at least for the term that research that is the name of my city - Paulínia)
Google Current - Results 1 - 10 of about 1,560,000 to Paulinia (0.05 seconds);
Caffeine Google - Results 1 - 10 of about 1,650,000 to Paulinia (0.08 seconds);

I hope to improve ...

So Google is developing an updated search tool called "Caffeine"

I'm not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (aka Mormon Church) but I do respect other religions. Since the Mormon religion disallows caffeine, please consider changing the name. It's kind of like marketing Google Bacon to Jewish or Muslim folks, or Google Brisket to Hindus.

First off I should mention I am very critical person and will nit-pick about almost anything until it is perfect.

I think it is absolutely great that Google is updating their algorithm to improve their search engine.

However I am not quite sure what people are searching, or if they are just searching their own sites, but I see almost no difference in search. If this is Google's attempt to out perform bing, I still am not seeing it (and no I am not a bing advocate I still use Google more.) There is still a lot of spam in these searches

This is quite exciting!

I notice more results from my website showing up.

I also notice that the ordering of items is slightly different for several key phrases.

But it's the larger basket of results that I like so far. Lately, regular google's search results # has been getting smaller.

I noticed that a search for my name and one for my business now properly has my website in the #1 position, which it should. (if someone runs a website, their name/business should show up 1st, even if there are bigger / more powerful websites with your name or business name listed). This is a FANTASTIC improvement.

It gives better credit where credit is due.

The only difference I can see is that sites that were using blogspots and blogs in general before that were doing good stopped doing good and did bad the past two months and now with this new algo infrastructure change those same sites that are using blogspots and blogs in gerneral are back to doing good again and are listed higher. So I see no real change at all, just a return to the same exact search results you had two months ago before your summer change which was a better change than this new old change. Personally I now like bing.com results better then google and hope the public will eventually too.

"If you have language or country specific feedback on our new system's search results, we're happy to hear from you. . . "

On the topic of language-specific searches, one feature I have been anxious for Google to offer is a shorthand operator for the language specifier (and the date range too, in fact).

I know we can set the language specifier on the Preferences Page, or we can go through the Advanced Search page. However, I have several searches which I do regularly saved in a plaintext document. These searches include many limiters I use to make my searches as accurate as possible.

For example,
site:domainname.com inurl:keyword1 intitle:titlekeyword -filetype:pdf -filetype:doc

etc. etc.

I would like to simply do a copy-and-paste of these pre-saved searches into Google's front page search screen. Limiting searches to displaying only English pages, and only pages updated within a specific time period, would be a real bonus.

Unfortunately, at the moment there is no shorthand for these two specifiers (that I know of).

Are these two features going to be offered in the future? If not, could they be added to a Google "to do" list? These features are certainly on my wish list!

A few hours ago i did again a little changes so it needs to take a while before i can see if it changed something.

Now i want to talk about your great new engine search!
I don't know how but if i search the keyword "אייפון" there, my website easily jumped to the second page. its like a miracle to me.

maybe you can look just a second on my website (www.iphoneil.net) to see if there is something wrong there.

Thank you and keep doing miracles for others!

How about when sometimes you search for a key word on google.com, you see for example 8 pages with results.

But when you click on the last page, you discover there are only 5 pages and you land on that 5th page....

i tried to test it:
1. Speed : it is fast.
2. Accuracy: You’ll notice that many of the blended search options, like image search and news, don’t appear in the new version.
3. Temporal Relevancy:A search for some thing also got the same Yahoo and BBC news articles.
4. Index Size:we can tell the index size based on how many results come up for specific search.

Doing a search for a local professional services provider (using the "city name" plus "lawyer") I get a lot of big directories in the results and very few local providers compared to the current google search. Is this because localization is not included in the sandbox, and if so, how can I test so that it is included?

(hris said...

Well, one difference is that it's DOWN more than old Google...!

I'll try to return later and maybe it will be working then.

I really hope you start "rotating" results that for the most part rank about the same. It's a feature that's long overdue and would eliminate much of the spamming that goes on, if done correctly.

I can not wait for this to be the standard. Rarely am I enthusiastic about changes to Google's search (especially as an SEO specialist) but something that I noticed in the new version is that our clients are ranking very well (even better than the norm) and websites that I know to use scattered link building practices are no dominating various search terms.

It appears that websites who's links come from news, media, social networks, real content oriented links are being rewarded above sites that just have directory links or links that get thrown to anything that will stick.

I look forward to the sandbox coming back up so I can continue to experiment with it.

I compared the results of the new Google from the old one and this is what I like about the new one:
1. The speed is tremendously improved;
2. The number of results is expanded;and
3. The user interface is friendlier, especially the "maps".

However, I also noticed some points for improvement:
1. The relevance of results is quite questionable (e.g. I saw one result where Caffeine showed a minor page of the website while the old one showed the main page of the website);
3. Maybe, You could add the services of Google like Blogger and Feedburner; and
2. "Simplicity is beauty" is still the theme with no change in the design.

Nevertheless, keep up the good work and good luck, Googlers!

I have a forum software project called "miniBB" and about 1,5 years ago we have moved from .net domain to .com. It's a shame for Google that a top keyword domain in the new version still appears only on the 6th or 7th search results page. I.e. if you type "miniBB" it will show the reference to minibb.com only in the end. Earlier we have very good traffic from Google, now it's zero. Just because of domain move? Can't believe in such "perfection".

I hope this is not final result of this "new core", because now people who steal/copy content rank higher than original site which I find really pathethic.

I noticed something today which I'll mention here in case it indicates a new vulnerability.

I searched for "open directory":

http://www2.sandbox.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Open+Directory+Project&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g5

The Open Directory project was the first result, but appended to the URL listed on the results page there's another URL:

www.dmoz.org/?id=www.interturknet.com/

Presumably this means somebody is deliberately linking to dmoz.org with this query string appended to the URL. I would consider this abuse or Spam. This problem doesn't seem to affect the current version of Google search.

I'll continue to submit feedback as advised. In case this helps I'm keeping a note of more general observations from my ongoing tests on this page:

http://www.timacheson.com/blog/2009/aug/google_reveals_new_version_of_its_search_engine

P.S. Like many others who work in the industry, I'm still hoping for confirmation that underscores in URLs are being treated the same way as dashes in the new version of Google search. :)

Finally some modern innovation. You need to go forowrd to keep the position nr.1 in the world, and simply to be the best and most firendly for users. I am sorry to say it but actuall engine is no as firndly for users as it used to be.
What I see in new engine is that the reoults od searching are much sensible and aslo it do works faster.

Anyone know if the "GL" variable used for "country code" is a replacement for the "LR" variable in international searches? So a search using "gl=de" would replace "lr=lang_de". The results are quite different.

Is caffeine going to handle 301’s as well as the old infrastructure? We did a 301 with a domain about a month ago to a more relevant domain name and on the Caffeine search results it is like 2-3 pages back on all the search terms from what they are on the current results. Any reason why that may be happening? Maybe pulling from dated data centers?? If that keeps up should we just go back to the old domain?? Google has always been good with the 301, not like Bing.

Tim Acheson said...

I feel obliged to follow-up on the last comment, by Jeff Manson.

Bing handles 301 permanent redirects no problem, and without any affect on ranking. (There were some initial problems from the Beta, these were fixed and that's old news.) We use them widely and half of the time Bing picks them up before Google does.

http://www.bing.com/community/forums/t/648638.aspx

"Google has always been good with the 301, not like Bing."

I don't understand why people feel compelled to say things like this, especially in this case when the only problem mentioned is apparently with Google rather than Bing.

Enjoy! ;)

Caffeine
I've disappeared for some keywords in a strange manner.

on www.google.com.br
for "pousada gramado", "pousada gramado rs", "pousada em gramado rs" my home page www.aardvarkinn.com.br appears on the first page.

for "pousada em gramado" a subpage appears on page 20

(similar thing happens for "hotel em gramado")

The Local Business Results seem to have reverted to a version that is months old. A business that closed and disappeared months ago has reappeared (is it a case of enough caffiene turning the dead into zombies ?). I am bothered as I no longer appear on the map :o((

Has anyone else experienced this ?

Jeff Manson said...

No disrespect, but we did the 301 a month ago and Bing still has not put the site back where it was in the serps. It was top 3 for most terms and is still not in top 3 pages. Bing is also not reading our dis allows in the robots text. Not trying to bash Bing or anything. I thing there new search is good, but they are not dealing with the 301's like you mentioned.

Aloha

Tim Acheson said...

Jeff, that sounds like a frustrating problem. I wonder if I can help. There are various issues that could cause the problems you describe with Bing, and Bing makes it easy for webmasters to identify and resolve these issues. You've probably used Google's webmaster tools features, but have you been using Bing's?

http://www.bing.com/webmaster

The most likely explanation for your problem is the way your site is configured in Bing.

Have you set up your site completely in Bing? And if so, what frequency have you specified in Bing for changes to the affected URLs?

Otherwise, if Bing decides that the URLs in question are only rarely updated substantially -- perhaps they change once per month or never -- you could certainly be crawled less often for that reason. Bing won't crawl a site more often than it thinks is needed.

Another common issue behind for problems of this nature is the way in which the SEO is set up. There are lots of potential candidates. E.g. If you set a disallow which includes the 301 URL, search engines may not crawl those URLs hence the 301 may not get picked up.

If you'd like to specify the URL for your 301 I could take a look at how you've done it and also check your robots.txt.

I set up a 301 on this page a couple of days ago and Bing's index has already been updated, in perfect accordance with the update schedule I set using Bing's webmaster tools.

http://www.timacheson.com/bing_beta_feedback

Hope that helps!

Financial experts have traditionally held that equities belong in a portfolio because, despite involving greater risk than cash or bonds, when held over the long term they offer higher return potential. However, that conventional wisdom has come under fire since the double whammy of the dot-com crash and the credit crunch. If you’re wondering whether it’s time to revisit the amount you’ve allocated to stocks, understanding both sides of the argument can help you make a more informed decision.

Phrases within quotes actually work now!

I am a developer, and I often need to search for code snippets that contain special characters (such as "session.CurrentDatabase") The old version would ignore the period, even though it is within quotes. The new version works great!

Tim Acheson said...

Thomas, I haven't noticed any difference in the handling of phrases in search terms, with or without punctuation within the quoted search term.

Your example returns similar results in the current version. Can you provide an example that will show how the new version differs?

Punctuation is of special concern to me, particularly with regard to underscores in URLs. I have not yet been able to confirm that underscores are being treated the same as hyphens in the new version.

More info on the underscore vs hyphen issue:-

Friendly URLs should not use dashes to represent spaces

At least one comment here states that more Twitter-pages are being indexed. I can't see that this is correct, at least not for the norwegian locale and language.
(no)

But I see that only a very few pages from www.twitter.com is indexed. Seems as the new engine is better at consolidating TLD hits that wrongly gets indexed pages from both www. and non-www URLs.

But shouldn't there be no indexed pages from http://www.twitter.com/ and only indexed pages from http://twitter.com/ ?

I entered "pictures of odessa ukraine" and got the link to mail order brides as the top result. I don't think that's very relevant. It seems there are cases when the site rank (e.g. number of links to it) is trumping the actual content on the site. For instance, my site that only has pictures of the city (www.sergeyv.com) is not even listed, whereas there are many results for "Russian women" kind of sites (I sadly find that demeaning).
