Tips on requesting reconsideration

Friday, April 24, 2009 at 10:23 AM

Do you think your site might be penalized because of something that
happened on it? As two leaders of the reconsideration team, we recently made
a video to help you discover how to create a good reconsideration request,
including tips on what we look for on our side. Watch the video and then
let us know if you have questions in the comments!

Does one always receive an answer when a reconsideration request has been reviewed and approved or denied?

For example I've done a (very detailed) request for a in my opinion a false ban through webmaster tools in January 16th but I've received no reply whatsoever.

I do hope to receive any response if the request was denied, particular in my clients case since it's not a standard ban situation.

Thanks for the video and I agree with JanJaap: Google should send an automatic response about the cause of the penalty and if the reconsideration request was not accepted. I know Google is a private company and there is no obligation to do that, but Google is also a powerful company and the power should also mean responsibility. Specially in a company that don't want to be evil.

For example, my site MyDDNetwork.com was penalized, I have sent request reconsideration with the things that I fixed and I have no idea if I should to relax and wait or if Google just will reject my explanations. Do you guys have any idea what bad is to have this type of uncertainty?

I have an opposite question:

Why I have reported a case in webmastertool for a spam report (very obvious one), but the links still show up in Google index after 1+ weeks.

And I do not get any reply for google (success or not).

Does it also apply to google adsense? I was not doing anything against the term of google adsense, but google banned my adsense account.......Can someone help me getting my account restored?

hmmmm interesting, my site has been penalized 1 weeks ago, I sent the review but I had no more than an automated response,
I think it should be more personalized process

I also can't view the video because of slow internet connection and the approach taken by Google in posting a video on this topic as opposed to posting text is typical of the approach Google takes to the market.

First, the internet is global and not just a tool of developed countries. Many people are forced to access the internet from slow connections or from behind firewalls or port chocking from ISPs.

Secondly, as the largest provider of search services Google has an obligation to respond to people when they make decisions that affect people's livelihoods. An automated response is insufficient.

Each day Google makes decisions that affect people the world over and each day the people who make those decisions sit in their ivory towers refusing to communicate the reasons those decisions have been made.

If the government suddenly announced it was breaking Google up because of its dominance in the market the executives of Google would demand and receive an answer.

Web masters wherever they are in the world are also entitled to an answer and the ability to access information freely. Information should not just be provided in the form of video that can only be accessed by those fortunate enough to have high-speed, open ported internet connections.

It's well time that Google stopped being so arrogant

The "Tips on requesting reconsideration" video, as all others vids, shows a great effort from Google in educating webmasters to be in compliance with the webmaster guidelines, but unfortunately, the average webmasters will only pay attention to the Google Webmasters Help Forum, and available help videos, when faced with penalties to their own sites. By then, since they don't know the reason for their misfortune, they just panic and start to make all kind of kind of changes that, most of the time, drive their uncertainty deeper and take their sites farther from Google's guidelines.

I'm a regular reader of the Google Webmasters Help Forum threats. I have learned that the best way to get out of penalty is to go the forum, ask for help submitting your site URL, and once the site issues are fixed, file a request for reconsideration including all steps you incurred to correct the problems. It's very, very important to include a link to your forum thread so the Google staff revising your reconsideration request can understand your case at a glance. Hope this info will be of help to some webmasters looking for help.

This is just the kind of information I've been looking for for a long while. I was afraid to use that request reconsideration since I wasn't sure which information to include.

Thanks!!

Thank you for the reconsideration information. I don't need to use it yet, but since I'm still learning, it's great to know that you all are very friendly, helpful people who realize (most of us) are friendly and human too. Thanks. Keep the info coming! :-)

Hello...

ATT: Brian White

My name is Malcolm and im the owner of biz-giant.com (directory network) and we have several reconsideration requests that where sent with detailed messages concerning our sites and have never received as much as a reply nor has the penalty's ever been removed (now 2 years).

My "humble" request is that you look over our sites namely sleekdirectory.com & Biz-king.com both suffering from that freaking dreaded page 6-7 penalty (dont show up for its own name when search is queried and biz-king still has PR0 2 years now). The rest of the network directories lack PR on home page and should at least get something as they have all been online for some time.

Now... We haven't bought any "paid links" and we use "no follow" on our home pages for any sponsors or network directories as per googles request and we follow the guidelines to the "T" and better then others so we see no reason that we be kept in limbo and punished any longer (unless you find something we missed of course).

The quality of our listings speak for themselves as our editors are All USA citizens and highly skilled in reading and using proper grammar. We don't peddle any links and only accept sites that are quality resources which are then correctly categorized and listed, we never accept spam for any reason... Period!

Again we humbly ask that you or someone from the search quality team restore our sites back without any penalties as any and all issues we found concerning google guidelines have been fixed long ago, yet are sites are still being punished.

I hope to get a reply this time and see that these issues finally be resolved so as to save myself a trip to your corporate/main office or the next SEM convention.

Should you want to speak directly with myself via phone (kinda hope you do) (623-229-2120) Arizona

We await your reply/response ...

Regards
Malcolm

How could I know if my web is being penalized and why? I think so but I asked my contacts in Ireland and Spain and they couldn't help me.

Thank you for this useful information. I have requested my site to be reviewed and its been quite some time now. I hope it gets reviewed sooner. What are the odds if one is not doing anything wrong then the penalty will be removed?

Preeti said...

Thanks for sharing the video. This subject has been a big concern for me and my colleagues for the past 6 months.

6 months ago, I submitted a request for www.arcadetown.com and have heard nothing and seen nothing change since.

Although we had not made any major changes to the site in many months, we assumed Google algorithm or Google Webmaster Guidelines. We have removed any potentially spamming techniques or violations that we may have implemented including:

Link exchanges: We used to have an active link exchange with other webmasters. We removed these from our site.
Incoming links from possibly penalized sites: When we had an active links exchange we only did so with sites that appeared relevant and reputable. Perhaps some of those sites ran afoul of Google guidelines over time.
We have also requested removal of our incoming links from sites that look like have been penalized.

Should we resubmit? I don't know what to do, I'm not even sure if it's been reviewed. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

My site ranks very well on Google.com, but not at all on Google.co.uk, despite being a UK focused site. Can anyone advise on how best to approach Google to get this put right?

LMR said...

Dear Rachel and Brian,
Thank you for posting the video. I actually have the reverse issue. A competitor's website is attempting to deceptively influence the crawler by adding competitor names and website references. Our website dbreath.com and name are among them. The text is hidden in the left hand column, as indicated in their source code: dbreath.com plasticsurgeryknoxville.com breazealclinic.com breazealplasticsurgery.com
knoxvillebreastaugmentation.com gallaherplasticsurgery.com parkwestplasticsurgery.com
Edward Breazeale, M.D. Tom Gallaher, M.D. David Reath, M.D. Steven Smith, M.D.
Dean Kleto, M.D.
I reported it on the spam report but did not get a reply. The deceptive website is plasticsurgerymd.com What else should I do to protect our site and the site of the other physicians involved?

Google really needs to send automatic responses. I have a few sites that I didn't have the time to develop and now when I finally get to work on them, I cant find the site indexed on Google.

Now I'm left here in the dark wondering if that site got banned for some reason. :(

My site http://surls.cc has been marked as a physhing site, where can I get more information about why. I've been trying to clear it on the standard form in Firefox for a couple of month to no avail, hopefully someone would be able to help me

What would be more helpful is some sort of tool that told you if you had a penalty or not. Determining if there is a penalty is not an easy thing to do.

moved my domains and hosting from websitesource to godaddy after experiencing too much down time on thr website source servers. I used to be page 5 on google for the search term Finger Lakes and page one for other search terms. I now do not appear at all for those search terms on google or other major search engines. What have I done wrong and what can I do about this?

Our main web site is www.cobtree.com

The major search terms were:

Finger lakes - appeared page 5 on google
finger lakes vacations - appeared page 1 on google
finger lakes cabin rentals - appeared page 1 on google
finger lakes vacation rental homes - appeared page 1 on google
finger lakes pet friendly - appeared page 2 on google.

All now lost!

We feel completely devestated by this loss as the search engines and inparticularly google is our main source for getting our customers, over 80% come through google. We also use google ad words extensively and pay to google over $7k per annum for keyword avertising.

This loss of our web site appearing against the keywords on your search engine could quite frankly, destroy our small business. PLEASE, is there anything that can be done to help us reinstate ?

Many thanks

Robert

We had a one page sting on our index.html page and now we have been labeled as a "Malware" Site. We corrected the Hack-Attack within Minutes of Notification. The Flag remains. The Flag has literally Destroyed our business. Why is it, we can be cleared to keep (paying) AdWords, but Still Flagged? Why would anyone want to keep (paying Adwords) to only send people to our "Flagged Malware" site. see for yourself. www.noahsclassifieds.org

So, I really do not understand the process. Good in one hand of Google but not the other?

Jonathan Simon said...

@Noah's Classifieds

I took a look at your site and was able to confirm that you've successfully cleaned your site of malware. So any malware warnings associated with your site should be removed soon. If you ever face this issue in the future, be sure and submit a "Request a review" (for malware) via Webmaster Tools as soon as you've found and removed any instances of malware. This will help expedite the removal of any malware warnings.

Arju even one of my site was penalized for same suspicion..But it is back with high pr..After some raw remedies , I continued the postings coz google crawler can not neglect fresh content for long..
The worst part is one creates another blunder in correcting the errors...Google should have a warning mechanism...Are you listening Google ?

No Adsence follows harsh rules.
No suspension , no warning Just the dismissal.Still you can try citing valid reasons or apology.

Cirurgia said...

Hi i have a website http://www.cirurgia-plastica.com that was in number one for many keywords like cirurgia plastica, cirurgia intima, etc and since 16/7/10 dropped to page5-6 for all search terms, which led me think that it got hit by the ggole minus 50 penalty. I am almost sure that the cause was excessive crosslinking between other sites that also got hit by the same penalty like http://www.lipoaspiracao.org and protesesilicone.com . The actions i took was to remove all the crosslinkng between the sites , that was a violation of google guidelines. Everything else seems ok. I wrote a reconsideration for google and i´m waiting for the results. Also i started a theread in webmasters google forum help http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=0576d166c3c8ff14&hl=en . Is there anything more that you guiys of the forum thinks that should be fixed? Sites that got hit by this kind of penalty usually get out? Is there an average time for the penalty to be lifted after sending the reconsideration request?

Thanks,
Valter

I watch this video because I have had a site hit because of "Doorway Pages."

I have been looking for hope. I saw that several people commented on the fact Google does not tell you anything other than what your site has been hit for.

I need some hope. I have submitted my request to Google and am waiting for a response.

I fear that it will never come.
