Google Friend Connect introduces the social bar

Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at 11:46 AM

Update: The described product or service is no longer available.

In our previous Google Friend Connect posts, we've enjoyed connecting with you, the webmasters, and hearing your feedback about Friend Connect. We're now standing on our own two feet -- find us over at the new Social Web Blog where we just announced the new social bar feature.

The social bar packages many of the basic social functions -- sign-in, site activities, comments, and members -- into a single strip that appears at the top or bottom of your website. You can use it alone, or use it to complement your existing social gadgets, by putting it on the top or bottom of as many of your webpages as you want.

For anyone visiting your site, the social bar offers a snapshot of the activity taking place within your website's community. One click on any these features produces a convenient, interactive drop-down gadget, so users get all the functionality of the Friend Connect gadgets, while you save real estate on your website. With the social bar, visitors can:
  • Join or sign in to your site, view and edit their profiles, and change their personal settings.
  • View recent activity on your website, including new members and posts on any of your pages.
  • Post on your wall or read and reply to others' comments.
  • See the other members of your site, check out other peoples' profiles, and become friends. Users can also find out if any of their existing friends are members of your site.
Watch this quick video to learn how easy it is to add a social bar to your website:

This tools looks great! I still need to research more about this before using it on my site though.
Yet another interesting tool from Google raises a question in my mind. Will this company evey stop at some point?? ;) Well I guess not.

Cheers

IDK, it makes my site look like I'm on some kind of free webhost who has a ad bar on the top of my pages. I love the idea, but I think this needs to look more like a social app than some type of invasive ad bar.

Prior to the abrupt change in format of the "Following" widget to the Google Friend Connect "social bar" over 120 people were following my blog and it was easy to see if one was following and simply click to follow someone. Since the change 11 followers have left (never happened before). It is because one can't tell if one is following a blog anymore simply by looking at the widget. One must sign in, scroll down through myriad avatars and find ones own to be sure. I would like to suggest the programmer refashion the appearance of the widget so the older "following" function is easier to comprehend and use simply. One shouldn't need to sign in at every single site one visits. I follow blogs in my blogger dashboard and feature followed blogs in the sidebar of my blog. This new widget is NOT very user friendly or intuitive. I hope you will tweak it so old school users can navigate it. Thanks.

PS, Please also notify users of a widget BEFORE you change it up. I like some features, but really don't need other parts of it. To have it just appear and replace my old widget was not a great way to introduce the changes.

I gave this a shot just as directed in the video, but blogger returned the error that it could not save it because the div tag appeared outside of the head tag. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
