Seamless verification of Google Sites and Blogger with Webmaster Tools

Note: Verification of Blogger blogs in Webmaster Tools has changed significantly. Please see the more recent blog post "Verifying a Blogger blog in Webmaster Tools" for more details.

Verifying that you own a site is the first step towards accessing all of the great features Webmaster Tools has to offer, such as crawl errors and query statistics. The Google Sites and Blogger teams have worked hard to make site verification as simple as possible. In the following videos, I'll walk you through how to verify sites created in Google Sites and Blogger.

These videos are available in our Help Center if you have additional questions about verifying a Google Site or Blogger blog with Webmaster Tools. And as always, you can find me and many other Googlers and webmasters in our Webmaster Help Forum.

I have been doing this, could do it in my sleep, just created a webpage, figured ok, lets try to verify that, did it all, still no page found, error code 404, this is a google problem, I now have a blogspot page, a You tube, and a webpage, all error, why on earth can't this be fixed, I have been blogging since November 10 plus hours a day to get verified, I am frustrated to the point of tears, and no phone support, only this you tube thing right here, which is zero help!I am angry, going to send all this to Bill O'Reilly, no one will help me, I have asked and asked, betting if he asks and puts it on his show you will help, and if not, you aren't doing me any good anyway. A top rated company offers no support, can make quite a headline don't you think? As far as doing this anonymous, no, but then again, to google I don't exist, so unfair, I am submitting a bill to google for all my man hours and lost revenue.

Is there a step to step explanation of this process available as a text, and not only as a video? I'm bind, and I'd like to read what I must do to verify my blog or website. With screenshots or films I can't do this. Thanks!

This is great feature, but sadly it doesn't work for me. Not all my bloggs I have created are added when I press the button and Google Webmaster Tools still claims that I have to verify my ownership of the websites.

Ok, let me try this a different way, a lot of people tried to put my Tinker2 in and no URL has come back. A person at google seems to want me to believe I am crazy, not true. So, if I start over, I bought a godaddy domain name, have it alreay pointed at google , do I pay to have this on the web? PLEASE someone help me, put to much time into my blogs and now to find they are nowhere, google you did it, you broke me down, happy? 3 moths, 10+ hours a day, 7 days a week and for what, nothing. Do I pay to have them hosted, is that the problem? when I stop crying , going to get some press out of this, google has treated me so wrong, not fair, no one either knows how to help or wants to. I send them the TINKEr page that is crossed, has the ladies name on it with my gmail address at the top, everyone sees it but google, will someone smart please call me? I can call you back and pay for it, I am finally out of things to try. Karen (717) 207-9458

I hope you can help. I have verified my site over and over again, but in about a week, Google is asking me to verify again. I have put the verification in my meta tags, and I have used the method of uploading a page to verify my site. When I first do it, everything is fine and my site is verified. I come back to Google Webmaster Tools and I'm told the verify again. Why is my site not holding Google verification. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I am in the process of verifying my webpage and have copied the HTML file to the specific location but still Google does not Verify it. Our site uses HTM pages and if the file copied is typed without the last 'l' charicter (in the URL), the blank page is seen.
However Google still do not verify this as it is looking for a html page. Help on this will be much appreciated.

I was finally able to verity my Blogger blog (now that it's using the updated content warning interstitial). But now there's a new problem. Ever since I voluntarily labeled my blog as adult it virtually vanished from Google Search. Webmaster Tools reports that everything is fine, but then why is my homepage not listed?

Has Google been hacked re. their database of site verification meta tags? For some reason nearly every of my 100+ sites is showing that they need to be verified.

In these cases there is an error saying the meta tag found was "xxx" and should be "yyyy".

In these cases the alleged "wrong" meta tag is not only what is there, it matched the tags in my original off-line files. I have not changed these tags, they are the exact tags provided by Google when I initially verified each of these sites.

Now Google is not recognizing any of their own verification tags and I am spending a day replacing and re-verifying them all with new tags.

Am I the only one who has been hit by this bug? If my codes were different on the server from those in my off-line files I would suspect a server hack changing them but that can't be the case because these codes on my server are unchanged from the original.

Any ideas as to what's going on here?

The instructions for the webmaster tools for verifying the blogger blog apparently don't work. There is no head or body tag on my blog post, and posting the assigned meta tag at the top just generates an error. There is nowhere to upload an html file. The blogger site cannot be verified, yet it exists every day. Have searched help postings and found this very subject touched upon but never has it been actually addressed. One posting from a highly experienced individual actually stated that the blogger sites were "automatically verified" as soon as one clicked on the webmaster tools link at the bottom. I can assure the community that this is not the case...the sites still report as "not verified"...and they can't be verified. I have read the comments above and noted that the level of 'service' being afforded for this most basic aspect of site monitoring is seriously wanting. We have 8 billion colors to use and can customize these sites until forever, yet getting the site verified by the corporation which puts it up is somehow impossible. I recognize that many tech types think this stuff is a big joke, but at the root of the problem is that a set of expectations has been laid out for customers which is not consistent with their experiences. Being "number one" doesn't mean that you sit on your lead. The company ought to read these comments and realize that numerous others are experiencing the same problem and are just quietly going elsewhere. Never forget, that is the customer's ultimate revenge.

Aaargh! @StuffDone et al:

Bet you changed your email address for your google account recently! I did and now I have to go through a reverify every single site! [sigh...]

Why google, why?...

Can anyone show me the error of my ways?
If we have dilegently read text and watched the video, but continiew to be unverified, what's missing?

Verification failed. We couldn't find the verification meta tag.
When I post questions I'm refered back to the article and video.
And the loop begins again: reread, rewatch, recopy, repaste, only to be un-verified again.
The painful parts are the obvious simplicity and feelings of futility
involved in not having my question ansewered.

Dear Google,
For some reason the blogger video tells me that it is private, and that I have to accept the invitation in my email to view it.
Are you trying to tell me something? Are you breaking up with me? I still love you....

Dear Cyperspaced, it looks like we've made things even easier for Blogger users now -- you don't have to do anything at all, your blog should now automatically be verified in your Google Webmaster Tools account. You can find out more at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=100452

Hope it helps!
