Reflections on the "Tricks and Treats" webmaster event

Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 5:20 PM

What featured over 750 webmasters and a large number of Googlers from around the world, hundreds of questions, and over one hundred answers over the course of nearly two hours?  If you guessed "the Tricks and Treats webmaster event from this earlier this month!" well, you're either absolutely brilliant, you read the title of this post, or both!

How did it go?
It was an exhilarating, exhausting, and educational event, if we may say so ourselves, even though there were a few snafus.  We're aware that the sound quality wasn't great for some folks, and we've also appreciated quite-helpful constructive criticisms in this feedback thread.  Last but not least, we are bummed to admit that someone (whose name starts with 'A' and ends with 'M') uncharacteristically forgot to hit the record button (really!), so there's unfortunately no audio recording to share :-(.

But on more positive notes, we're delighted that so many of you enjoyed our presentations (embedded below), our many answers, and even some of our bad jokes (mercifully not to be repeated).

What next?
Well, for starters, all of us Webmaster Central Googlers will be spending quite some time taking in your feedback.  Some of you have requested sessions exclusively covering particular (pre-announced) topics or tailored to specific experience levels, and we've also heard from many webmasters outside of the U.S. who would love online events in other languages and at more convenient times.  No promises, but you can bet we're eager to please!  Stay tuned on this blog (and, as a hint and hallo to our German-speaking webmasters, do make sure to follow our German webmaster blog  ;-).

And finally, a big thank you!
A heartfelt thank you to my fellow Googlers, many of whom got up at the crack of dawn to get to the office early for the chat and previous day's runthrough or stayed at work late in Europe.  But more importantly, major props to all of you (from New Delhi, New York, New Zealand and older places) who asked great questions and hung out with us online for up to two hours.  You webmasters are the reason we love coming to work each day, and we look forward to our next chat!

The presentations...
We had presentations from John, Jonathan, Maile, and Wysz.  Presentations from the first three are embedded below (Wysz didn't have a written presentation this time).

John's slides on "Frightening Webmastering Myths"

Jonathan's slides on "Using the Not Found errors report in Webmaster Tools"

Maile's slides on "Where We're Coming From"

Hello Googlers,

I like the gadgets you provide, but I do NOT like the 'gadget tabs' along the left side of the iGoogle page. Jeez Louise, if I want to go to a gadget I can just move the mouse over 4 or 5 inches and click on it! All it does is make my page content smaller. I've got a big screen, I want to see BIG gadgets.

How can I get rid of the gadget tabs feature? Please?

Best,

Hi Adam,

Yesterday I went to do a google search and I found a bunch of new digg-style social voting feature on the results page. I know this has been covered before and screenshots have circulated, but I don't think anybody has put out a video documenting the experimental new features so I put one together: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1942391/googles_new_social_voting_features/

Let me know if you or anybody in the community want more info on how the features work and I would be happy to post another video, answer questions or get some screenshots. I’m a big fan of this blog so I am very interested to see how the community would react to this video.

Thanks,
Justin Baker

Thanks for slides. I do love them all, esp Mr John Mu's one, which clarifies many of my doubts.

Also the man whose name starts with an A and ends with an M needs to be "punished" for not recording the important audios!

But he "confesses before the dark" (a Vietnamese idiom) and does a great post instead. So we, this blog's loyal readers should think of his well-done job! :-)

Go on Googlers!

It was a nice experience to talk to the top Googlers and other fellow webmasters. They used Web interface for all the interactions. A question-answer section was there where we all posted our questions and they were answered by the Google team.

Hey this may be slightly off topic (and by that I mean waaaaaaaaay off topic) but I've noticed the newly rendered google logo for Halloween. It looks pretty cool, but a lot of the detail gets lost due to its size.

Could you guys, by any chance, blow it up? I know a lot of people who would like to get a better look at it (plus I think the artist would be stoked that their work is huge for the world to see; ARTISTS ASSEMBLE!).

Thanks guy(s)

Really debunked many of the myths that I subscribed to.

Yep, me too was awake in the wee hours, but was worth it.

Any transcript of the audio available?

Thank you guys so much for this. I know way too many people who are paranoid of google, and while being wary can be healthy, I think there is a ridiculous amount of fear out there. It seems on par with 9-11 conspiracy theories.

Anyway, I remember at one point, I think during the first myth debunking, you guys had mentioned that it can take 150-300 low quality links to equal just one good, relevant link. I'd like to cite this, and I was wondering how I could do that and if you could give me the exact line from the event. I remember it was specifically something you guys mentioned relatively early on (maybe first 30 minutes?) and isn't in the questions section.

Thanks guys!

We are running a site that spurns content for our users. the corporate sign up site is www.advisoryinc.com.
typically all users portal will be feed with the same articles.
e.g. belinda.advisor.sg & http://demoaccount.theadvisor.asia/

Would this be classifed as duplicate content? How would google classify this kinda sites?
