We hope that you're able to focus on helping users (and improving the web) by creating great content or providing a great service on your site. In between creating content and working on your site, you may have read some of the (often conflicting) link discussions circling the web. If you're asking, "What's going on -- what do I need to know about links?" then welcome to the first day of links week!
Day 2: Internal links (links within your site)
Day 2: Internal links (links within your site)
Internal linking is your homepage linking to your "Contact us" page, or your "Contact us" page linking to your "About me" page. Internal linking (also known as link architecture) is important because it's a major factor in how easily visitors can navigate your site. Additionally, internal linking contributes to your site's "crawlability" -- how easily a spider can reach your pages. More in Day 2 of links week.
Day 3: Outbound links (sites you link to)
Outbound links are external sites that you're linking to. For example, www.google.com/webmasters links to the domain googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com (our lovely blog!). Outbound links allow us to surf the web -- they're a big reason why the web is so exciting and collaborative. Without outbound links, your site can seem isolated from the community because each page becomes "brochure-ware." Most sites include outbound links naturally and it shouldn't be a big concern. If you still have questions, we'll be covering outbound linking in more detail on Day 3.Day 4: Inbound links (sites linking to you)
Inbound links are external sites linking to you. There are many webmasters who (rightfully) aren't preoccupied by the subject of inbound links. So why do some webmasters care? It's likely because merit-based or volunteered inbound links may seem like a quick way to increase rankings and traffic. Answers to your questions like, "Are there no-cost methods to maximize my merit-based links?" are provided on Day 4.Update: Included references to blog posts as they were published throughout links week.

Here is something I was waiting for. Looking forward for the series of posts.
Please do discuss the importance of directories, one way-two or 3 way links! etc when you discuss about inbound links.
Maybe I'm confused, but where did day 1 go?
@carlg Today is Day1, they're just telling us what's coming up in the following days.
The problem of link structure and link building is really important for a website. These series of posts may tell webmasters how it works and how to do right. I'm waiting for posts :)
So is there any post for today?
Or is the purpose of "Day 1" just to tell us what is ahead?
"There are many webmasters who (rightfully) aren't preoccupied by the subject of inbound links."
Must be nice to live in a world devoid of competition...
Please comment:
1. Links between a network of web sites owned by the same company. For example:
http://www.ecomattress.com/
2. Web sites that rank high for a set keywords that will redirect to a different domain, for example:
http://www.google.com/search?q=organic+mattresses&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
In this case, www.organicmattresses.com ranks No. 1 for "organic mattresses" with no content, and all traffic is being redirected to www.lifekind.com
It's going to be an interesting week. This is a really great topic for you guys to cover.
thanks in advance.
In your final lesson, how about explaining to us why some of the largest SEO black holes on the internet (Wikipedia) have nofollow on all outbound links.
Then again, I'm not too sure you guys take as much note to nofollow anymore/getting phased out... Well, or so my research is showing.
Thanks for this, positive advice - and rewards for 'good behaviour' - is a much better approach than concentrating on penalties for 'bad behaviour' (ask any psychologist!).
Keep trhis up and you could revolutionise SEO and make life much tougher for spammers, as they'll not have the incentive!
hmm, interesting this came out the day seomoz made their announcement regarding links as well. que interesante.
hmm interesting! Let's hear it from the real experts finally. Can't wait for the other articles!
What a great blog, interesting topics! I love reading this material.

great post topic. should be interesting to hear Google's official take. fwiw *everyone* please remember G can't tell the whole truth about linking practices. so dont drink too much koolaid :) still very cool series of posts though, I applaud G for being out here doing this for us.
are reciprocal link be taken like two externals link (two outbound link) ?
thanks
Can internal linkings only help to boost PR and SERP's on a particular Keyword?
if any site creates link pages like http://www.seo-speaking.com/links.html
how does google take such pages?
Wow, Finally this question is answered by Google themselves.
It seems like Google has completely ignored all our comments and questions here. All this information they are posting this week is not news. I think most people on this thread are not looking to the Fundamentals of SEO.
C'mon Googlers, answer our questions.
I have noticed a similar thing to William. Looking for beer in Australia our biggest brand is Carlton Cold.
If you go to www.carltoncold.com.au you find an insurance scam website that appears to have got hold of the domain somehow. If they have managed to buy the domain for the links then the Whois information is wrong because it is still the proper information for the company that makes the beer.
I think that people need to be taught as much as possible about this stuff. I can't believe that someone (an seo?) has thought that getting links from a beer website to an insurance website could possibly help the Google search engine rankings!
I'm just glad of any help I can get. Keep it coming. Thanks.
How do I make an internal link on my blog????
Where do I find out how to make that first internal link on my blog??????????????
This stuff works.........
when i view the internal links to a link in my blog, i am getting links that are not actually internal links. Am pretty confused
check this link for a screen shot of the internal links
http://bit.ly/2r5zQw
it lists about 49 links all of which do not reference the link that i have given in find text box.
Reciprocal link comes in which type.I want to know is that good to have such kind of links with the site or not................??
As i have used reciprocal links with learn internet and I want to go with the best strategics..
I'm grateful this post has been made. I'm very puzzled if having many internal links in your site is good or not. I've read an article saying having many internal links on your site would make searcg engines perceive of your site as being a directory becoz it has many outbound links. Also , is it necessary to hyperlink your sources at the bottom of each post to their outbound and information sources?
I built some inbound links for this site: http://visatovietnam.com but why google can not index the links ?
Thanks a lot for info. I build inbound links to my site http://myintervision.com but none of them are showing up. And when i check my links on google link:myintervision.com no results. Why google doesn't index my links.
