A new layer to Google Trends

Friday, June 20, 2008 at 9:13 AM

Two years ago, we launched Google Trends, a tool that lets anyone see what the world is searching for, and compare the world's interest in your favorite topics. Last year, we added Hot Trends, which shows what people are searching for right now - the fastest rising search queries on Google, updated every hour. And just last week, we introduced normalized search volume numbers available for export in Google Trends.

Today, we add a new layer to Trends with Google Trends for Websites, a fun tool that gives you a view of how popular your favorite websites are, including your own! It also compares and ranks site visitation across geographies, and related websites and searches.

Let's take a look at one example, the release of Radiohead's In Rainbows album. As part of our annual Zeitgeist, we post the fastest rising search terms, and this past year, radiohead took the crown as the fastest rising search term in the last quarter of 2007.

Using Google Trends, we can see the search volume for radiohead compared to in rainbows over the last 12 months.

radiohead vs. in rainbows

With Hot Trends, we can see that on October 10th (the release date of In Rainbows), people were most interested in downloading In Rainbows and reviews of the new release.

Now, using Trends for Websites, this story can be viewed from another perspective: we can see how the number of unique visitors that visit radiohead.com and inrainbows.com has changed over the last 12 months, the countries where the sites are most popular, the top related sites and search terms.

radiohead.com vs. inrainbows.com

We can see that in October 2007, radiohead.com (the blue line) saw a huge surge in popularity. The release of In Rainbows clearly drove many people to visit the band's website. The album's website, inrainbows.com (the red line), saw an even more dramatic jump; probably because that is where you could actually download the new album. And, it looks like site traffic to radiohead.com has increased overall, even as inrainbows.com traffic declined.

Keep in mind that Trends for Websites is a Google Labs product and that we are experimenting with ways to improve the quality of the data. Because data is estimated and aggregated over a variety of sources, it may not match the other data sources you rely on for web traffic information. For more information, be sure to check out our Website Owners FAQs.

Great tool. Thanks!

I tested some searches and it seems that Google properties are filtered and do not show any data. Is this true?

For instance, no data is presented for google.com, blogspot.com or even blogger.com. See:

Youtube.com doesn't show any results either...

You are soooo good to disclose other people's data where all your domains are hidden. This is hideous!

google.com
gmail.com
orkut.com
youtube.com
froogle.com

Wow, I bet you wouldn't be too happy if a Google employee released all the stats for Google domains?

So will be a competitor of Alexa?

This is awesome - Loved using google trends for keyword insights - now I can monitor my competition in the bedding world. What I would still like to see is a simple search keyword tool with usage searches by word - versus the generic list of keywords google serves up. I kept using the overture search tool for a long time and do not like any of the paid tools out there - like wordtracker, etc.

Cheers
Stef

It seems that there is quite a high minimum number of visitors required before it shows data. I checked over numerous sites, comparing with Analytics data and the sites that have less than 5000 visitors per day (in analytics) don't show "no data available".

On top of that, those sites that have more than that amount of unique visitors, show numbers that are completely wrong, always way less than they really have. Looks like it is all ofset by something like 20,000 unique visitors.

Mostly Brazilian sites I'm looking at by the way.

I think this is the good move from Great "G". I will use it for my site World Amazing Inforamtion as keyword research tool.

But I wonder why google.com and yourtube.com results dosent come up. While Yahoo.com and MSN.com comes up. What if I want to compare - Google, Yahoo and Msn, all three together.

i think that this new service is still pretty "green". In fact to show websites and blogs' trends a lot of data is involved and this data has to be collected in a lapse of time of years. That's why you guys dont see most of websites. My website webtlk is not even shown here while in alexa is fully represented. I think it is pretty normal because this Google service is new. Anyway I also think that this service has been launched to support the forthcoming AdPlanner which is or will be a new way to advertise for agencies.
if you want to know more about AdPlanner here is a little article explaining what it is:

Just for the record, Google has said (in other blogs) that:

"We do not show Google properties on Trends for Websites. We have policy of not providing interim financial guidance, and have decided not to release Google numbers in accordance with that policy.

Hello Google,
I just cant get of this now ! its a great tool. I would love to see more on Google stats but hey why would you let others see your stats.

Sebastian said...

This really needs an opt-out option, other than dropping our of Google's search engine altogether.

That they won't let you see their traffic stats but feel quite happy to show everyone elses (or do they?) is sheer hypocrisy.

"Do no evil" has yielded to the corporate creed, "gimme $$". The Google that shook up the net when it got started, not only with its technology, but with its principles is long gone and instead it's now just another greedy corporate entity with no respect for anything but the bottom line.

but this tool doesnt give ranking like Alexa what ever the ranking of the website.

Do no evil!...uh, yeah! Ok!

Tipping hat to the leader in search leading the way in democratizing search analytics.

Tough pill to swallow for search analytic companies profiteering on access proprietary access to information.

For those looking to build competitive web presence and increase traffic this should be a a couple notches on your learning curve.

Clearly a move for the greater good.
