Google's email communication with webmasters

Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at 11:56 AM

Posted by RĂona MacNamara, Webmaster Tools Team

We've noticed that someone is again trying to spoof the emails that Google sends to webmasters to alert them with issues about their site. These emails are not coming from Google, and in fact several weeks ago we temporarily discontinued sending these emails to webmasters while we explore different, secure ways of communicating with webmasters. Watch this space for more news - but in the meantime, you can safely assume that any email message you receive is not, in fact, from us.
The comments you read here belong only to the person who posted them. We do, however, reserve the right to remove off-topic comments.

Thanks for posting this and letting people know!

why should you discontinue helping others because of spoofing - that is a cowardly way out.

Allow people to call and verify or verify via a code that would be sent with each email and verified online

This shows a shallow and 'easy way out' attitude that is very unbecoming from such a hi tech company.

Hmmm if you only had an rss feed for the blog.

hey wait a minute...

Why not simply post your messages for webmaster to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/siteoverview and then only notify webmaster via e-mail.

I think that the most easy method is to post like Ivan say´s in his comment.

It´s an easy and quickly way that
apparently isn´t a problem for google.

Sorry for my bad english ;-)

Have you considered GPG signing your email messages? Then if I ever get one of your email alerts in my gmail box..... oh, wait, gmail doesn't support GPG message signing. Nevermind.

I disagree with http://search-engines-web.com/'s comment. I appreciate the fact that Google is not trying to save face by implementing a "quick fix".

I am currently in the penalty box and would have really appreciated a warning email ahead of time.

I am a bit surprised you threw in the towel so quickly. You couldn't think of a better solution?

I'm confused - in post from URL above it states emails are sent.

Are emails sent or NOT?

Do you notify people or NOT?

Thanks for letting us know.... but... this is not your style..

What is the point of removing url's, if they subsequently appear as 404's again. How many times can you remove an old and now non-existent url and still have it reappear as a 404. Is there any point in removing them, if Google accepts the removals and then continues to act like they were never removed. It seems like a pointless waste of time. Google wants to report 404's independently of what you do. I have over 40 404's. Almost all of them have been removed numerous times and Google has accepted that removal each time. Is Google just playing with me? Some of those 404's were posted weeks ago and I have removed them a number of times and Google has accepted their removal. Yet, there they are as if nothing has happened.

Hi Bette,

If you have a question or problem regarding the Google Groups service, you can post it in their help forum.

If you have a problem specific to the Webmaster Help Group, we encourage you to post it in the group so that everyone can benefit from the answer.

If your question includes private or sensitive information that you can't post publicly, you can contact the group's owner by going to the "About this group" page and clicking "Send email to the owner".

PLEASE DO NOT POST THIS ANYWHERE!

Please will you get in touch with me as soon as you possibly can?

I was attempting to contact Google privately only and my information is now on the internet. Please know it is urgent that I get it removed,

Bette Kiernan

Bette, comments that you post on this blog become immediately public, so please don't post any information here that you don't want everyone to see.

If you need to urgently remove information from the Google index, you can do so using Webmaster Tools' URL removal tool.

If you still need to get in contact with someone privately, you can use the method I described above.

PLEASE DO NOT POST:

I am having great difficulty with the website to remove comments that I never intended to have posted.

I would be extremely grateful if I could access a person through email.

I would be so appreciative, I cannot tell you.

PLEASE DO NOT POST:

Please may I contact someone by plain email? I have a serious problem that I must address. I have not been able to use the Help part of G groups.

Hi Bette:

We don't provide user support over email. I've started a thread in our Webmaster Help Group that will hopefully answer your questions. Please read it here; if you have any remaining questions, please add them to the forum thread and not here in the blog comments.
