More insight into anchor text

Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at 11:47 AM

Last month, we replaced the individual anchor text words that we showed for your site in webmaster tools with a list of full anchor phrases. This report shows you the top phrases that other sites use to link to the pages of your site. Now, we've enhanced the information we show you in the following ways:
  • We've expanded the number of phrases we show to 200.
  • You can now see the variations of each phrase (for instance, with different capitalization and punctuation).
  • More sites now have access to the anchor phrase report. So, if you didn't have this report before, you may have it now.
  • We've brought back the report showing the most common individual words in anchor text (you asked; we delivered!).
  • We've expanded the number of common words in anchor text and common words in your site that we show to 100 each.
To view this information, click the Page analysis link from the Statistics tab.

In addition, we've updated our robots.txt analysis tool to correctly interpret the new Sitemap instruction that we announced support for last week.

We hope this additional insight is helpful in learning how others view your site and keep your suggestions coming! We're listening.

I've seen that some page data, such as common words, has never appeared for some sites listed in webmaster tools.

The problem seems to be related to "early adopter" sites; sites added later to "Sitemaps", even with a low PR, show this data. There has been discussion in Groups [http://groups.google.com/group/Google_Webmaster_Help-Tools/search?q=common+words&start=0& ], but no clear answer.

A similar problem exists with the "Your page with the highest PageRank" function - no data, no heading.

Is this a bug?

As discussed at the semdiscussion site - Shingles and Duplicant/Similar Content

After checking the new anchor text and the "In Your Site's Content" section of the "Page Analysys" part of the Webmaster Tools - we found a lot of terms from our footer of the website (located on every page of the site). The words like "terms and conditions" and "privacy policy" were getting picked up as general terms by Google. Yet experts say that these shouldn't be counted per the "shingles" or "duplicant content" algorithms.

So if Google filters out this content, why is it showing up in the webmaster tools?

I was looking in my query stats and it said I ranked (31) for a couple terms in UK. But when I use UK google for http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=SEARCH+TERM&btnG=Search&meta=cr%3DcountryUK%7CcountryGB

it isn't anywhere in top hundred.

is this something that could be fixed in webmaster tools?

looked for a place to suggest this and this is the best I could find

sorry if this isn't the right spot

please forward this suggestion if you know where it should go.

Hi,

I am not a programmer, but I was trying to find the Google customer service email. I couldn't find it so I am posting this comment here.

Will Google start Google Auctions?

Since yahoo auctions has decided to retire, there really won't be anyone to fight Ebay.

I think this is perfect opportunity for Google to go into this market.

No listing fees!

Just a final fee.

Customers win and so does Google.

Thank you for reading.

It's great that you are adding more features. However, I am concerned because I have not seen any updated information in my sites Webmaster Central Tools account since early April. I know I have received a bunch of new inlinks from really good, relevant sites, but the Webmaster Central account has not yet reported on any of them. It shows that my sites home page was last accessed a couple days ago, but still no change to the list of inlinks from external sites or from internal links. I realize that you don't update it every day, but I’m starting to grow concerned that Google is not finding or recognizing all the great inlinks my site has been receiving. Please let tell me if it is normal to have no inlink updates for over a month in Webmaster Central tools or if there is something wrong with my site or webmaster account. Thanks for your time!
