Update on Public Service Search

Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at 10:56 AM

Public Service Search is a service that enables non-profit, university, and government web sites to provide search functionality to their visitors without serving ads. While we've stopped accepting new Public Service Search accounts, if you want to add the functionality of this service to your site, we encourage you to check out the Google Custom Search Engine. Note that if you already have a Public Service Search account, you'll be able to continue offering search results on your site.

A Custom Search Engine can provide you with free web search and site search with the option to specify and prioritize the sites that are included in your search results. You can also customize your search engine to match the look and feel of your site, and if your site is a non-profit, university, or government site, you can choose not to display ads on your results pages.

You have two opportunities to disable ads on your Custom Search Engine. You can select the "Do not show ads" option when you first create a Custom Search Engine, or you can follow the steps below to disable advertising on your existing Custom Search Engine:

1. Click the "My search engines" link on the left-hand side of the Overview page.
2. Click the "control panel" link next to the name of your search engine.
3. Under the "Preferences" section of the Control panel page, select the Advertising status option that reads "Do not show ads on results pages (for non-profits, universities, and government agencies only)."
4. Click the "Save Changes" button.

Remember that disabling ads is available only for non-profit, university, and government sites. If you have a site that doesn't fit into one of these categories, you can still provide search to your visitors using the Custom Search Engine capabilities.

For more information or help with Custom Search Engines, check out the FAQ or post a question to the discussion group.

How do those of us with existing Public Service Search sites login to change our current layout, check stats, etc? I would gladly switch to the new search service, but I would also like to modify my exiting service to redirect or disable.

I too would like to know how to login to our existing Public Service Search site to change our current layout, check stats, etc.

It's disappointing that there was very little communication from Google in the newsgroups regarding the status of Public Service Search.

You can find out more about that here (question 30):
http://google.com/coop/docs/cse/faq.html#30

If you use Public Service Search now and don't need to change anything, it will continue to operate as normal. However, if you would like to log in and make changes, you'll need to create a new Custom Search Engine account and replace the Public Service Search code on your site with the Custom Search Engine code. You'll be able to customize the look and feel, as well as receive traffic stats.

date March, 2 2007.

This produces me a lot of SPAM im my e-mail.
Also the part of the private letter of Carmen Monarcha has to be removed. Better should be to remove the whole text.
Thank you.

How is Google missing the total pages indexed abuse. There are websites that create a protected directory for wwwboard, which is not linked to or working at all, just so then can upload thousands of dummy pages to increase there PR.

Vanessa or anyone that works for Google,

I have a PSS and did my dutiful try of setting up a CSE... I had Google techs helping me with my CSE for over a month, and they could see nor fix the problem I was and still am having with it.

I have currently been waiting over two months for someone to contact me back with an answer to the last question about my CSE that I asked them.

It seems the they are as clueless as to how to fix my problem as I am about why someone from Google can't just give me access to the Search engine that presently works with Google? My PSS works fine, and SOMEONE has access to it, because it is running on some computer - somewhere in the world.

I am trying to be cooperative with Google but it seems that no one from Google cares enough about my issue to help me see it through.

Please help me... I have been waiting over six months to re-launch this section of my website, and I cannot do it unless I can finish this search...

Wheelock College has used Google Search for many years. Recently when I went to update the header I was told that I was not able to because of a security breach.

Now I find I cannot find the correct link. Can you help me out?

It seems as though this has gotten extremely complicated with little direction from google.
